New SARS-Like Virus Can Probably Pass Person-to-Person official
New SARS-like virus can probably pass person-to-person with Saudi Arabia having the biggest cluster of cases. Full Story: Here in eastern Saudi Arabia, three days after his father died from a respiratory infection, Hussein Al-Sheikh began to feel feverish. [Hussein Al-Sheik]: "After my dad passed away, the first one was me (infected) I felt really sick so I admitted in ICU, then after me my brother who got sick and now he is still in ICU and hopefully he is going to get better, then my sister." It emerged his father was likely a victim of novel coronavirus, a new SARS-like disease. Of the four Sheikh family members who fell sick, only one, Abdullah has tested positive for the virus. The samples from the other three, including their father, are still being tested. The virus first emerged in the Gulf last year and has claimed 18 lives so far. The World Health Organisation said it seemed likely a new coronavirus could be passed between humans, but only after prolonged contact. [Keiji, Fukuda, WHO Assistant Director General]: "Of most concern however is the fact that the different clusters seen in multiple countries increasingly support the hypothesis that when there is close contact, this novel coronavirus can transmit from person to person." Britain and France have also reported cases in people who had recently been in the Middle East. India Welcomes Pakistan Election Result official
New Dehli says it's looking forward to strengthening ties with Pakistan's new government following the country's landmark election whilst Afghanistan hopes Pakistan will crack down on safe havens. Full Story: As Pakistan celebrates a landmark parliamentary election, its neighbour - and sometimes rival - India is also bullish about the future. New Dehli says it's looking forward to working with Nawaz Sharif, whose party looks set to form Pakistan's next government. Indian foreign minister Salman Khurshid says he thinks bilateral ties between the two countries will be strengthened. Meanwhile, Afghan officials said they hoped Pakistan's new president would address head on the issue of safe havens for insurgents along the porous border between the two countries. [Janan Mosazai, Afghan Foreign Ministry]: "We very much hope that the next government in Pakistan will pave the way for sincere and result orientated cooperation with Afghanistan, especially when it comes to the need for both countries to work together honestly and in a practical manner to eliminate the sanctuaries and safe havens that exist for terrorists in Pakistan." Afghan officials say Pakistan has a long history of supporting Afghanistan's Taliban and other insurgent factions. Pakistan has in turn accused Afghanistan of giving safe haven to militants on the Afghan side of the border. Pakistan Hopeful for the Future official
Pakistan residents hope for a bright future as former Prime Minister Sharif poised to win landmark election. Former Prime Minster Nawaz Sharif is poised to win - as local newspaper headlines reference his campaign mascot. UK Students Shocked at Forced Organ Harvesting in China official
Prisoners of conscience killed for their organs. Allegations that the Chinese Communist Party has been carrying out these criminal acts surfaced in 2006. Now, more and more people are finding out, and it's drawing strong reactions. [Shahnoor, Chemistry Student, Leeds University] "Shockedmore than anything. But I knew that forced organ harvesting was going on but I wasn't quite aware of the scale of it and how it's more driven by money and it's a bit sickening." Global medical advocacy group, Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, organized this panel at the Leeds University in the UK on May 3rd. Independent researchers Ethan Gutmann and David Kilgour were there to speak about abuses inside China's prison system. Both have investigated—and concluded—that the Chinese regime gets the bulk of the organs used in the country's transplant system from prisoners of conscience, including Tibetans, Uyghurs and in particular Falun Gong practitioners. [Priscilla, Politics and International Relations Student] "I was sick to my stomach. I, sort of like my blood level shivered, to know that something like this, something like a holocaust sort of movement, even worse than the holocaust, something that still exists in the 21st century." Part of the problem is the international demand for organs that has made it such a lucrative trade. Countries like Taiwan, Australia and Israel have already started to address the issue. In 2008, an Israeli doctor successfully lobbied for the ban of medical insurance for transplants operations done in China. Since then, Israeli patients have stopped travelling there for organs. [David, French Teacher, Leeds University] "I feel that it is our responsibility, the UK, France and all the countries around the world to put pressure on China. I believe we can do a lot and we need to get a mobilization, a mass mobilization of people all over the world to stop these atrocities." One way to do this, according to Priscilla, is to help groups like Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, spread the word. [Priscilla, Politics and International Relations Student] "Social media, start tweeting it, start Facebooking it, let everyone know about it, and get more people involved in it, and informing people, that's the first thing I can do." Zhu Ling Poisoning Case Brought to the White House's Front Door official
A high profile case of a Chinese student poisoned nearly 20 years ago is making headlines again, landing at the foot of the White House. Back in 1994, Tsinghua University student Zhu Ling was poisoned with a powerful chemical called Thallium. It damaged her central nervous system, leaving her nearly paralyzed and brain damaged. Many believe Zhu's college roommate Sun Wei was responsible, but she was never charged. Some think this is because of her family ties: her grandfather was a close friend of former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin and her father's cousin was the deputy mayor of Beijing. Sun now lives the Unitd States, and Chinese citizens are appealing to the US government. This petition on the official White House petition page, We the People, received more than 100,000 electronic signatures in just three days. And a petition only needs 25,000 signatures for the Obama administration to be obligated to respond. [Wang Juntao, PhD in Political Science, Columbia University]: "Even though a lot of people suspect Sun Wei, I didn't sign the petition to say she was guilty, but, I want the Chinese government to investigate. If things like this are allowed to happen, then no one is safe, if the law is enforced, it can't protect people." The topic is now trending on Chinese Internet. Some have mocked the country's legal system for not properly investigating the case. Caijing Magazine deputy managing editor Luo Changping writes, (quote) "The White House website is now the (China's) State Bureau for letters and calls." That's the office that's meant to address citizens' complaints. Aside from calling for a new investigation, the petition is also urging the US to deport Sun Wei. [Peng Yongfeng, Former Chinese Lawyer]: "Sun's family background, especially under China's political system, is something that everyone is interested in. The US should be watching too, because someone suspected of a crime like this, could pose a big security threat." With the renewed interest in the case, Chinese censors are going to work. Search terms "Zhu Ling" and "Sun Wei" have now been blocked on the popular Sina Weibo microblog. Subscribe to NTDonChina ☛ http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... Pentagon Report U.S. a Continued Target of China's Cyber Attacks official
China has long been accused of using cyber attacks as part of its military strategy, particularly against the United States. In its annual report to Congress yesterday (May 6) on the People's Liberation Army, the Pentagon placed a stronger emphasis than ever on the seriousness of these attacks. [David Helvey, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia]: "China's military continues to explore the roles of military operations in cyberspace as a feature of modern warfare and continues to develop doctrine training and exercises which emphasize information technology and operations. In addition in 2012, numerous computer systems around the world, including those owned by the United States government, continued to be targeted for intrusions, some of which appear to be attributable directly to PRC (People's Republic of China) government and military organizations." Examples of such attacks include the alleged theft of blueprints for the F-35 and F-22 stealth fighter planes. The Chinese Foreign Ministry denied the accusations in the US report, restating its position against hacking. [Hua Chunying, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman]: "China has repeatedly stated its opposition to the so-called network attacking. China firmly opposes any form of computer hacking and is willing to have peaceful and constructive dialogues with the United States on network safety." Despite this denial, US lawmakers have described China's ever expanding use of cyber warfare as a "cornerstone" of PLA operations. Earlier this year US cyber security company Mandiant published a report saying they had tracked a significant number of cyber attacks back to a 12-storey white tower in Shanghai. Mandiant believes the tower is the headquarters of People's Liberation Army Unit 61398. These allegations were also denied by the China's Foreign Ministry. Theft of US military secrets would allow China to defend against or even reverse engineer replicas of US weapons. This is part of an over all military expansion. In the 83-page report the Pentagon said that Chinese military spending had increased by almost 10% annually for the last ten years. China announced a military budget of $114 billion in March, but the Pentagon estimates that figure could be as high as $215 billion. The US military however, is still far ahead, at an annual military budget of over $500 billion. Subscribe to NTDonChina ☛ http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... Shen Yun Performing Arts is showing in the Mirriam Theater, Philadelphia to a packed house. Richard Gaglio says he's seen all the best performances the city has had to offer over the last forty years, but never before has a show taken him to heaven. Full Story: Shen Yun Performing Arts is performing in the Mirriam Theater, Philadelphia to a packed house. Richard Gaglio says he's seen all the best performances the city has had to offer over the last forty years, but never before has a show taken him to heaven. [Richard Gaglio, Owner, Computer Sales Company]: "From that day till now, nothing has excited me as much as seeing this Shen Yun dance troop. It, it blesses you, it moves you, and it makes you think beyond just, just who you are, and it gives you hope that, that the best is yet to come. Gaglio felt Shen Yun brings peace and joy, and builds hope. [Richard Gaglio, Owner, Computer Sales Company]: "Each dance sequence, everything that, their, their faces their movements, all at the end say 'there's hope for tomorrow, there's a reason to live tomorrow, there's a reason to go on tomorrow' and when you can do that without speaking you've elevated not only yourself, but the audience to a place that they don't get a place to go. Ever." He noticed the audience is spellbound not wanting to miss a moment. [Richard Gaglio, Owner, Computer Sales Company]: "There's electricity in the air, it makes you want to see more, it makes you want to look more, it makes you part of the show. You're not just sitting and watching, you are sitting and being part of something. Bigger than what you are. And, if you notice, there's nobody talking, there's nobody looking around, everybody is riveted right there on each and every dancer, on each and every movement. I'd come back, if I live to be a hundred I'll come back every year." He says Shen Yun will change the world. [Richard Gaglio, Owner, Computer Sales Company]: "You said it in the first song, something in in the effect, atheism is a lie, evolution is a sham, but heaven, this will take you back to heaven. And it does. Can you be blessed more than that in one night? I don't think so. And, and there isn't an empty seat in the house. It should be sold out all across the world. Because if you do this, you'll find, at least for that night, people come together without their prejudices, without their preconceived ideas, people will come together for that moment. And if they can come together for that moment, they can come together for another moment, and another moment and another moment and over the years this, this dance will make a difference, not just in New York city, not just in Philadelphia, but throughout the world." From Philadelphia, Shen Yun moves on to Madison, Wisconsin, May 7-9. [Park Geun-hye, South Korean President]: "Today's revival of Sungnyemun is not simply the restoration of a cultural property. I believe it will revive our people's pride and open a door for the new era and hope." After five years, I'm so happy to see the restoration of the gate." The gate, built in 1398, was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul. It had survived invasions and colonial occupation and was one of the few historic structures in the capital to remain standing after the 1950-53 Korean War. Gunmen Kill Alcohol Seller in Egypt's Sinai official
Gunmen shoot a man dead who was selling alcohol in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Full Story: Gunmen shot a man dead who was selling alcohol in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Sunday (May 6) in an attack security officials suspect was likely carried out by Islamist militants. The four gunmen killed Rami Ahmed, 28, at a bar on a main road near El-Arish, a town in the northern Sinai Peninsula. It is an area where Islamist militant influence has expanded since the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak more than two years ago. A security official said the victim came from the Nile Delta, north of Cairo, suggesting the shooting was unlikely to be related to local tribal rivalries. Egypt's government has been trying re-establish state authority that collapsed in Sinai following the 2011 uprising against Mubarak. Hardline Islamist groups based mostly in North Sinai have exploited the vacuum to launch attacks both across the border into Israel and on Egyptian targets. In August last year, 16 Egyptian border guards were killed in an attack blamed on Islamists who then hijacked an armoured vehicle which they smashed across the border into Israel, where they were killed by Israeli forces. Last month, Islamist militants fired two rockets from Sinai into Israel. Tensions High After Israel Attack on Syria official
Israel reportedly carries out two air strikes inside Syrian territory aimed at arms for the militant group Hezbollah, drawing a stern rebuke from Damascus ally Iran. Full Story: Tensions are rising along the heavily-defended border between Israel and Syria. The Jewish state reportedly launched an air strike inside Syrian territory on Sunday, its second in three days. But he did say he was determined to ensure Israel's safety. The attack comes with Syria embroiled in a brutal civil war. While the air strikes were aimed at Hezbollah, a former senior Israeli diplomat said Israel was not taking sides in Syria. [Alon Liel, Former Director Generalof the Israeli Foreign Ministry]: "If somebody in the region, especially in Syria or Lebanon will understand these attacks as direct intervention in the civil war, it might be a real problem for Israel. Syria and its ally Iran - which have both been accused of supporting Hezbollah - condemned the air strikes. Malaysia Polls Stained by Ink Row official
Voters' complaints of fading indelible ink used to stain their fingers threaten to leave their mark on Malaysia's election. Full Story: Complaints that the indelible ink used at polling stations isn't completely indelible may leave their mark on Malaysia's showdown parliamentary election. The ink is used to mark the fingers of voters. It's intended to stop them voting more than once. But some say they've been able to remove the ink easily. [Tan, Voter]: "I wash it with Dettol and the ink all came off. It should not come off, according to the authority. It's not a problem for me but what I think, there will be a lot of fraud will be perpetrated as a result of the removal of this ink." Similar concerns were raised by security forces who voted ahead of Sunday's main polling day. But the deputy head of Malaysia's election commission insists the ink isn't the only safeguard against voting fraud. [Ahmad Omar, Election Commission Deputy Chairman]: "Names only register once. Once a person is registered, if it get detergent or whatever to prove the point, but his name you cannot find anywhere else. There is only one name registered." Bangladesh Building Collapse Death Toll at 622 official
Rescue workers continue to recover bodies from the rubble of the collapsed garment factory and say they see many more still trapped inside. They're still removing bodies --- and the death toll from the worst industrial disaster in Bangladesh's history is now at 622. In all, 53 bodies were recovered on Sunday and rescue workers say they can see more trapped in the rubble. "Women Above Ghost's Heads" Exposes Torture at Masanjia Labor Camp official
"Under the ground are ghosts, above the ground are women in the camp." But it's the women who are living in hell in the Masanjia Labor Camp. That's the horrific tale of just one survivor of the notorious Masanjia Women's Labor Camp interviewed in the new documentary "Women Above Ghost's Heads." Masanjia is literally built on top of a graveyard, in northeastern Liaoning Province. For many years, it's been described by former inmates, rights group, and NGO's as being a hell on earth, where brutal torture is a daily routine. [Du Bin, Director of "Women Above Ghost's Heads"]: "I was deeply moved when they were talking about their sufferings during the horrendous torture. They were calm, like it happened to someone else. I was deeply touched because this kind of torture is beyond any normal person's tolerance, but they were still so calm. I think they are extraordinary". New York Times photograph Du Bin interviewed 12 former Masanjia inmates. Many were adherents of the Falun Gong spiritual practice, believed to be the main group targeted in Masanjia. After hearing the grisly torture these 12 women endured, Du was unable to stay silent. [Du Bin, Director of "Women Above Ghost Heads"] : "I wanted to let others know that torture like this should not happen to human beings. As a human being, I cannot accept this. That's why I made this film. I don't have any fear, or else I wouldn't have made it. I must point out that we are human beings, not animals. We can't be subjected to torture and attack arbitrarily." Du Bin's documentary follows an exposé on Masanjia earlier this month by Lens Magazine, a relatively liberal Chinese media. The article was later pulled, but not before creating an uproar on the Chinese Internet. The Masanjia Labor Camp was expanded under disgraced politician Bo Xilai. He has been sued overseas by former inmates for torture and crimes against humanity. Since his political downfall last year, cracks have sometimes appeared under the Chinese regime's strict control of information on labor camp abuses and Falun Gong's persecution. But even as more details come to light about Masanjia, Liaoning authorities have officially denied it's involved in any abuse and torture. "Women Above Ghost's Heads" will be released globally online on May 1st. Subscribe to NTDonChina ☛ http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... Hundreds Protest in China's Wukan Village Once Again official
Hundreds of residents of the village of Wukan once again took to the streets on Saturday, blocking a public highway in southern China’s Guangdong Province. According to villagers, police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, and four protesters were detained. The families of those in custody didn’t know where they were being held. Villagers said officials were stalling on the restoration of farmland sold for development by former Communist Party village chief Xue Chang. However, residents said they saw strangers in a crowd of people who protested outside the village committee on Friday. Some villagers believe the protests were incited by political allies of Xue Chang to overthrow the committee. Xue Chang and local Communist Party officials were ousted in December 2011 following a series of peaceful protests by Wukan residents. Surprisingly, the villagers were then allowed to elect their own village committee, which took over in March 2012. South Korea Says Door is Still Open for Talks With the North official
South Korea's unification minister says door is still open for talks with North Korea on the suspended Kaesong industrial zone. Full Story: South Korean Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae on Tuesday April 30, said the door was still open for talks with North Korea over the suspended Kaesong industrial zone. North Korea on Friday rejected a South Korean proposal for talks aimed at restarting the joint factory zone, saying the South had acted in an "unpardonable" manner to jeopardise a "precious" legacy of the rivals' bid to seek peace. North Korea held back seven of 50 remaining South Koreans at the suspended factory zone north of the heavily armed border on Monday, citing last-minute checks on taxes and wages. The North withdrew its 53,000 workers from the complex this month amid spiralling tension between the two Koreas. The North had prevented South Korean workers and supplies from getting in to the zone since April 3. South Korean officials said the seven remaining workers were not at risk. But the delay was another complication in what had been a decade-long experiment merging the affluent South's capital and the North's cheap labour as a trial on commercial cooperation. The two Koreas remain technically at war, under a truce rather than a ceasefire, that ended hostilities in their 1950-53 conflict. North Korea, angry at U.N. sanctions and joint South Korean-U.S. military drills, has in recent weeks threatened both countries with nuclear attack.
