James Graham Ballard (born 15 November, 1930) was a British novelist and short story writer who was born and raised in the Shanghai International Settlement. After the attack on Pearl Harbor the International Settlement was occupied by the Japanese. In early spring 1943 they began interning Allied civilians, and Ballard was sent to the Lunghua Civilian Assembly Center with his parents and younger sister. He spent the remainder of World War II in the internment camp. His experiences during that time formed the basis of his novel Empire of the Sun, which was later turned into a movie by Steven Spielberg starring 13-year-old Christian Bale, as well as John Malkovich and Miranda Richardson. J G Ballard died on April 19 2009, aged 78 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Jonathan Ben-Mordecai is the name of the character played by 15-year-old actor Eli Machover in the BBC series 'Roman Mysteries' based on the historical children's novels by Caroline Lawrence. At £1 million per hour it is the most expensive British children's TV series of all time. The following video shows clips from two different Season 2 episodes, so don't expect them to make any sense. Roman Mysteries follows the stories of Flavia, Nubia, Jonathan, and Lupus, four young friends growing up in Ancient Rome. As they try to get to grips with Roman society they also have to deal with the very modern issues of prejudice, violence and the environment. This excellent series informs and educates children to the history of the Ancient Civilisation whilst providing entertaining stories full of mystery and suspense. Season 2 of Roman Mysteries currently airs on BBC One. The complete season 1 is available on DVD from Amazon.co.uk.

Skellig is a 1998 children’s novel by David Almond. In 2007 it was selected by judges of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals as one of the ten most important children’s novels of the past 70 years. 10-year-old Michael moves to a new home with his parents. The house is rather old and needs a lot of work, and Michael’s baby sister is born with a heart condition, so his parents don’t have a lot of time for their son. One day Michael discovers a strange creature in the garden shed. The creature’s name is Skellig, and could be mistaken for an ordinary homeless person if it weren’t for the pair of wings on his back… A feature length adaptation of Skellig, starring Oscar®-nominated actor Tim Roth in the title role and Bill Milner (Son of Rambow) as Michael, aired on Easter Sunday and turned out as a ratings hit for Sky1 with almost 1 million viewers tuning in. Good film adaptations of children’s literature are unfortunately quite rare because all too often adults are displayed as too stupid and children as too smart to be believable. But this one was actually pretty nicely done. Skellig will be out on DVD on April 27 and is available from Amazon.co.uk.
When I first saw the poster that was advertising Garth Jennings’ 2007 movie Son of Rambow I was 100% sure that this was a film I definitely didn’t want to see, because it looked like just another kids movie that was trying to be funnny but really wasn’t, and I’ve already seen too many of those. The trailer then made me second guess, and when I finally saw the actual film I completely changed my mind. Son of Rambow is probably one of the best and funniest kids movies I have seen in recent years. It’s witty, it’s charming, and it makes me want to be a boy in the 1980s again. Both Bill Milner and Will Poulter give excellent performances. Poulter will play Eustace Clarence Scrubb in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader to be released in 2010, but I truly hope we’ll see more of him before that. Son of Rambow is available on DVD from Amazon.co.uk.
