Pegah Emambakhsh's Interview - BBC Radio 4 - March 8th 2008
Pegah Emambakhsh is a 40-year-old Iranian lesbian. She became a refugee in the United Kingdom in 2005 to escape Iranian prosecution against homosexuality, after her partner was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to death by stoning. At first, her asylum demand was refused by the UK government. Emambakhsh was arrested on 13 August 2007 by the UK authorities in Sheffield. Her deportation to Teheran was planned for the 28 August. After a campaign and a protest involving several homosexual and human rights organizations like Amnesty International, Emambakhsh was freed on September 11 and is now a refugee awaiting asylum. On 7 March 2008 it was reported that Pegah Emambakhsh may be deported to Iran after losing the latest round in her battle to be granted asylum. If this happens then she faces a possible death penalty, on the grounds of her sexual orientation. Iran: Execution of 29 People, Sunday 27th July 2008
The European Union has condemned in the "strongest terms" the execution of 29 people at a notorious prison in Tehran last month. The country's state broadcaster IRIB even broadcast interviews with ten of the condemned men in which they said they deserved to be killed for their crimes, which reportedly included rape, murder and "disrupting public security and peace." "The 29 who were executed were involved in the smuggling of narcotics on a wide scale, organised crime, murder and armed robbery," said Tehran prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi. The executions, which were carried out on Sunday 27th July, bring the total number in 2008 to more than 150. In 2005 Iran sparked international outrage when it publicly executed two teenage boys. Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni were hanged because according to the regime they were rapists, however gay campaigners insist the boys were killed under Sharia law for the crime of homosexuality. At first it was claimed by Iranian officials that they were aged 18 and 19. The best evidence is that both youths were aged 17 when they were executed and therefore minors, aged 15 or 16, at the time of their alleged crimes. Iranian human rights campaigners estimate that 4,000 gay men have been executed since the Islamic revolution in 1979. http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-8603.html http://gayswithoutborders.wordpress.com/

London – 7 March 2008 Gay Iranian asylum applicant Mehdi Kazemi is in detention in the Netherlands. He is fighting attempts by the Dutch government to return him to the UK. Mehdi fled Britain and sought asylum in the Netherlands because the British government wants to deport him back to Iran. The gay human rights group OutRage! campaigns on asylum issues and supports Mehdi Kazemi’s claim for refugee status. OutRage! spokesperson Peter Tatchell said: “The Home Office decision to deport Mehdi back to Iran is shameful and reckless. “If returned to Tehran, he will be at risk of imprisonment, torture and execution. “Gay men in Iran are hanged from public cranes using the barbaric method of slow strangulation, which is deliberately designed to cause maximum suffering. “This deportation order borders on a criminal decision. It violates the government’s legal obligations under the Refugee Convention. “The Home Office country report on Iran ignores the true scale of homophobic repression, in order to justify the deportation of lesbian and gay Iranians. “I have been tipped off by a senior Home Office official that government orders are to cut asylum numbers at almost any price. “Staff are encouraged to assume that all asylum applicants are bogus and to play down the merits of individual cases, such as Medhi’s,” said Mr Tatchell.
