Lo spartiacque si trova nel fondovalle, al valico della Sella di Dobbiaco. La Rienza scorre nella Pusteria Occidentale (nota anche come Valle Verde), mentre nella parte orientale (detta anche Hochpustertal), divisa tra Italia e Austria, scorre la Drava che, dopo aver attraversato tutta la Carinzia (in Austria) e la Slovenia, entra in Croazia e, dopo aver segnato per diversi chilometri il confine con l'Ungheria, si getta nel Danubio.
