Remembering Rufus the Bobcat...
Rufus the blind bobcat kitten was believed to have been hit by a car on Dec 4th in South Carolina. He weighed just 4.2lbs, had a broken jaw, split canine and was comatose.After he woke up from the coma he was pretty loopy, the South Carolina rehabber figured the impact had done brain damage. They had to wire the jaw shut, tube feed him and remove the broken canine, he was taken in by Big Cat Rescue on Feb 12th 2012.We continued with the rehab process and all fell in love with this brave little bobcat, unfortunately his seizures returned and a particularly severe episode claimed his life...Rufus will be missed dearly by everyone who got to know him and of his story. Goofy Leopards!
The leopards at Big Cat Rescue are definitely some of the funniest cats at the sanctuary! They're often "break dancing", playing with enrichment, stalking tour guests and just being goofy! Melanistic Geoffroy Cat Dental

Cougar Couriers!
When a big cat collector in Texas died she left behind 20 lions, tigers and cougars in a barn on her property. Thanks to a five part collaboration of sanctuaries, GFAS - The Global Federation of Sanctuaries and YOU all of the cats were rescued!Max the cougar needed to be transported to Safe Haven Rescue Zoo in Nevada so Big Cat Rescue stepped in to help. The 5500 mile round trip from Tampa to Nevada took 3 staff members over a week to complete at a cost of $0.50 per mile! Thank you to everybody who helped support this journey and helped give Max a new lease on life :)

Tiger Surgery - Big Cat Rescue
Modnic a female tiger who was rescued in 2007 from Savage Kingdom in Florida, undergoes surgery to remove cancerous tumors. (*Some graphic scenes of surgery are shown)Savage Kingdom was a breeding facility in Florida that was closed down by the USDA in 2006. Modnic along with three other tigers, TJ, Bella and her sister Trucha were rescued by Big Cat Rescue. Texas Tiger Rescue
3 Tigers rescued from Wild Animal Orphanage (WAO), a San Antonio, Texas sanctuary that went bankrupt in 2010. In 2003, Wild Animal Orphanage (WAO) took in 24 tigers that had been living at a New Jersey facility that was shut down by the state. After declaring bankruptcy in 2010, WAO contacted the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and other organizations for help in placing these tigers and the rest of their big cats at other sanctuaries.WAO struggled for over a year to find permanent homes for all of their cats because it is hard to place a big cat who will cost $10,000 per year in food and vet care.Amazingly, an anonymous donor couple who had known these tigers as cubs fortuitously stepped in to fund the ongoing care of three lucky tigers who are coming to Big Cat Rescue. White Tigers - Cruelty NOT Conservation.
White Tigers do not exist in the wild, they are purposefully inbred in captivity to meet the demand of the paying public. The kind of severe inbreeding that is required to produce the mutation of a white coat also causes a number of other defects in these big cats.The same gene that causes the white coat causes the optic nerve to be wired to the wrong side of the brain, thus all white tigers are cross eyed, even if their eyes look normal. MAX - Rescued "Pet" Bobcat...
Max the bobcat kitten was at the center of a months-long legal battle that touched off after a Rhode Island vet seized him from someone who bought him from a backyard breeder... It is illegal to have bobcats as pets in Rhode Island. The cat's owner went to court to get the cat back, but the state won.
