Cette chanson était à l'origine une chanson écrite par Keith Richards en 1969 à l'occasion de la naissance de son fils, Marlon. Mick Jagger aurait réécrit les paroles pour parler de sa relation avec Marianne Faithfull qui était en train de se s'effondrer. D'après une légende, le refrain "Wild Horses couldn't drag me away" ("des chevaux sauvages ne pourraient pas m'arracher d'ici") serait la première phrase qu'aurait prononcé Marianne Faithfull après être sortie d'un coma suite à une overdose en 1969.
