Hong Kong's Dog Breeding Problems official
For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2CAs thoroughbred dogs become increasingly popular among Hong Kong's trend-obsessed population, loopholes in breeding laws spell misery for thousands of dogs raised on puppy farms or by unregulated 'hobby breeders'.The dog market in Hong Kong is big, but not necessarily legal. Frankie Leung, Chairman of Judges Committee of Hong Kong's Kennel Club's dog show, estimates that thousands of dogs are smuggled from China every month.[Frankie Leung, Chairman of Judges Committee]:"They don't care, they just breed, and then they don't get their injections, and then when the dog, when the puppy comes over, they'll also bring diseases and viruses. These puppies also tend to be bad-tempered. So you know that is really worrisome to a breeder like us, you know. We don't want any dogs smuggled from China."These dogs are also typically mistreated.[Vivian Chiu, SPCA Education Officer]:"In Lau Fau Shan there is an illegal breeder, and it was found that around 100 dogs had been put in very small cages, all in very critical condition.Currently, no legislation exists to ensure pet care or the size of space for animals kept in shops for sale. However, Fiona Woodhouse, a veterinarian at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Hong Kong, says that might be changing.[Fiona Woodhouse, SPCA Vet]:"The Hong Kong government has done its research and realized the state of the situation and the scale of the issue. And in real terms it means about 10,000-12,000 puppies each year are going through the regulated pet trade, i.e. the pet shops and 75 percent of those are coming from an unregulated trade source. So the government now is looking to improve regulations. It's actually discussing new measures coming in to regulate all dog breeding, which has to be a good thing."

Hong Kong’s Pink Dolphins at Risk official
Hong Kong's pink dolphins are at risk.Conservationists announced a dire outlook for Hong Kong’s signature pink dolphins, if China doesn’t make huge changes in the way it’s handling environmental problems. Between 2003 and 2011, their numbers decreased by half, plummeting from 158 to just 78. Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society chairman Samuel Hung said, “It is up to the government and every Hong Kong citizen to stand up for dolphins. We risk losing them unless we all take action." Experts attribute the most recent dramatic population decline of the mammal to overfishing, increased marine traffic, pollution, and coastal development.Hung believes individuals should lobby the companies involved in these activities to cease or diminish practices that harm the dolphins. The animals, technically called Chinese White Dolphins, are listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as being "near endangered".The skin of the pink dolphin is actually white or light grey. In some areas, such as Hong Kong, the changes in temperature causes activity in the blood vessels that makes the flesh appear to be pink.. Their exterior looks more pink as they get older.

Investors are concerned that the Exchange maybe over paying with a $2.2 billion bid for the London Metal Exchange it won last week.

Hong Kong's dirty habits official
Smog hangs over Hong Kong's skyscrapers, smothering the city's edge as a leading financial centre. Hong Kong's air quality is now among the worst in Asia. And that pollution problem is threatening the city's pro-business reputation. Business leaders say authorities haven't adequately addressed the issue, which costs close to $6 billion dollars in tangible and intangible losses each year. A quarter of businesses polled by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong say the environment is an important issue. SOUNDBITE: AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, ENVIRONMENTAL STEERING COMMITTEE GROUP LEADER, EVAN AUYANG, SAYING (English): "Now if you talk about make or break, would they make it on environment, we would say typically not. However, when people exit Hong Kong they decide; 'I can't stand it anymore,' or 'I don't want to be here anymore', the environment is typically one of the primary factors." Charity worker Suzanne Brucks moved back to Germany after two years in the city. SOUNDBITE: FORMER HONG KONG RESIDENT, SUZANNE BRUCKS, SAYING (English): "Since I've been back in Berlin I haven't had those problems. I have no respiratory problems, no coughing, no headaches, I don't feel sick and I'm absolutely certain it has to do with the, sort of, fresh air in Berlin." Roadside fumes, marine pollution, and smog from tens of thousands of factories in China's nearby industrial heartland all combine to choke Hong Kong. Regional and local incentives have been announced to address the problem. Authorities say a new pipeline will see 50 percent of local power-generating plants run on natural gas. But critics aren't convinced. Some figures suggest that between 2007 and 2010, an average of 1,200 people a year died from heart and respiratory causes, linked in part to poor air. Sarah Charlton, Reuters.

New Year Protest Against Hong Kong's Beijing-Backed Leader official
More than 10,000 people in Hong Kong marked the New Year with fresh calls for democracy and a leadership change. [Agnes Chan, HK College Student]: "Today we march to demand for the resignation of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. He did not come to power through universal suffrage. The people did not authorize him, so he does not listen to the people's voice."Hong Kong is ruled separately from mainland China as a Special Administrative Region. Since the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997, the Chinese regime has pushed back the timeframe for letting the Hong Kong public elect its leaders. Currently, they are appointed by a small group of people and approved by the Chinese Communist Party. [Jackie Hung, Protest Organizer]:"That universal suffrage and democratic development is not the hope and demand for (just) today -- we have been asking for more than 20 years. But the first of the day in the year is also a good timing for us to tell the government again that we urge for universal suffrage."The delay of popular election has fuelled anti-China protests in Hong Kong. Critics of new Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying say he is acting as a puppet of the Communist regime.Protestors also voiced anger over a national education course that many saw as propaganda from the Mainland. [Agnes Chan, Student]: "We can also see Leung Chun-ying has many political tasks, he is an underground Communist Party member, and we see signs of Hong Kong becoming more 'red'. Therefore we hope to protect our next generation, to guard the future of Hong Kong. So we demand for Leung's resignation and fight for a democratic system."Calls to remove Leung grew in November after he admitted to building illegal structures on his property before he was elected last July. He first tried to cover up the additions, calling into question his integrity.Police say the protest amassed some 17 thousand protesters but the organizers estimate it was closer to 130,000. The government issued a statement today saying it would listen to the opinions of the people. For more news and videos visit ☛ http://ntd.tvFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2C
