The sea turtle population in the waters of Bali, Indonesia has been steadily declining in recent years. So to help the turtle numbers increase, locals built a conservation and education center. Our correspondents bring us there.Sea turtles are an important part of the ecology here on the Indonesian island of Bali.So when sea turtle numbers started declining due to hunting by poachers, the Balinese community decided to do something to help.Five years ago, they built this sea turtle conservation and education center in South Denpasar.The center gets turtle eggs from groups caring for rare species around Bali.The eggs are hatched in special incubators.The center is funded through tours to the public. And its chairman of conservation hopes that as more people learn about the turtles, the less they will be hunted.This year the center has released six thousand young turtles from back into the wild.NTD News, Bali, Indonesia.

Turtle named for Obama freed on Independence Day motionmaker

A recovered loggerhead sea turtle named after President Barack Obama was released in the Atlantic Ocean off Key West on the 4th of July. The turtle was rescued on Key West's Higgs Beach on Jan. 19, the day before Obama's inauguration. It was then transported to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon. "The turtle came in at a historic moment and was named after the new president, so we thought it was appropriate to release 'Obama' to freedom on America's Independence Day," Butts said. About 100 people watched the turtle's release. "We got the turtle down on the sand and it took off," Butts said. "It was so excited and swam away with all the energy it had."
