A team of Russian scientists are learning more about the snow leopard in order to protect and save them from extinction. Here’s more from our correspondents. These unique images were caught on camera, set up in the mountains to the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The images show a female snow leopard with three cubs.Today in Russia, experts believe that only a few dozen snow leopards are left. It's necessary to provide protected areas to save them from poachers. And for this purpose, it's important to find the migration routes and habitat of these cats.To learn more about the snow leopard, scientists of the Russian Geographic Society have developed an innovative method for monitoring it. It is called “Irbis”.[Sergey Istomov, Scientist]:"First and foremost, it is to save the animal. As you know, when it dwells on the reserve, it's more or less protected."The scientists film animals with a hidden camera, study their tracks, explore DNA and observe them from a helicopter or by satellite. Previously only one of these methods was used because of the lack of resources. As a result, the study was incomplete.Today snow leopards dwell in three reserves. They are Sayano-Shushensky, Khakas and Uvs Nuur Basin. According to researchers, the snow leopards are now doing well in their protected habitats.Another reserve will open. “Pozarym”, located in the republic of Khakassia, will serve to link all the snow leopard habitats in Russia.[Victor Nepomniaschy, Director of Reserve "Khakas"]:"We'll be able to secure the migration corridor and retained Irbises."In addition to creating protected areas, the researchers plan to educate locals on snow leopards and why it's so important to save them.NTD News, Moscow, Russia

Lamb with Five Legs Born in Northwest China
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Follow us on Facebook ☛ http://me.lt/9P8MUn And take a look at this... a lamb born with five legs. The little lamb may be just a few days old, but seems to be getting around pretty well. The lamb with five legs was born in northwest China's Gansu Province recently, the first ever at one local sheep farm. The extra leg, which is undersized in comparison with the other four, is non-functioning. Fortunately, however, the extra limb does not hinder the four-day-old lamb's daily activities. "The lamb is in good health. It can suckle and eat feed. Such deformed animals do exist, but are quite rare." Limb deformities in lambs mainly result from abnormalities in embryonic development, the probability of which is only one in several million.

Endangered Hainan Gibbons Suffer From Loss of Habitat
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://me.lt/9P8MUnIn the Southern province of Hainan lives an ape species, Hainan Gibbons, that number less than 100 in the world. They and other endangered species living in the region face the threat of habitat fragmentation. Here's more.In Hainan, China, the country's largest rainforest also houses a number of exotic and endangered wildlife species. In particular, the Hainan gibbons, are a rare ape species, and number only 23 in the world. The gibbons live in the Bawangling National Nature Reserve. But their habitat is in danger because of agricultural development. The 43-page Greenpeace report states plantations have already taken over 13% of the forests. But habitat is the key to preserving endangered species.[Yi Lan, Greenpeace Forest Campaigner]"The situation is still grim. I just mentioned the Hainan gibbons are the only primates with a population of less than a hundred, so they are still critically endangered. Most conservationists think if we want to protect the Hainan gibbons, the key is to protect their habitat. We need to solve the problem of their habitat's destruction."Greenpeace's handout video shows a row of gum trees, a plant not native to the natural habitat. "It does have an effect. The river level drops, because they plant gum trees. You need a lot of water to plant gum trees, so it causes a fall in water level."The destruction of habitat is one of the primary dangers for Hainan Gibbons. Hainan Gibbons closely escaped extinction in the 1980's numbering only seven in the world. Since then, numbers have increased to 23.

33 Rhino Horns Seized by Hong Kong Customs
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://me.lt/9P8MUnIn Hong Kong, customs officers seized over $2 million in ivory, as well as 33 rhino horns. The shipping container came from Cape Town, South Africa and is believed to have been en route to other nearby countries.Other than the horns, 758 ivory chopsticks and 127 ivory bracelets were also in the shipment.Rhinos are hunted for their rumored cure-all horns, despite the fact that horns are scientifically proven to have no medicinal value. Myths say that rhino horns can cure everything from fever to cancer.A seizure of 33 horns is a record high for Hong Kong customs who have only ever caught one or two horns being smuggled on an individual basis.Although no arrests were made, authorities will investigate the case.
