[KXLY]That small effort saved two human lives. Spokane Firefighters responded to the scene and found the couple and their pet in the back of the truck. Crews estimate they fell about 5 feet after the dumpster was emptied into the vehicle. The truck was mostly empty at the time of the incident. The driver had only run the compacter one time prior to unknowingly picking up the family. The lack of debris in the back contributed to their survival. Both the man and woman were transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure, but neither one was seriously injured. A newly hired hangman has walked off of the job at a prison in Sri Lanka, prompting officials to once again review application. A newly hired hangman has walked off of the job at a prison in Sri Lanka, prompting officials to once again review applications. He only lasted a week, but at least he made it to work. Before him, the two others who’d been offered the post didn’t show up at all. The man who did show up decided the job just wasn’t for him after seeing the gallows. In light of the incident, the prison has decided to switch up its training schedule. Rather than waiting until the end of the initiation period, going forward they’ll be showing the new person the execution site first thing. The job as of late has been primarily an administrative one as there hasn’t been an execution in the predominantly Buddhist nation since 1976, but there is the chance that the duties could change. A recent spike in crime has some calling for the practice to be resumed. In addition to large number of prisoners currently sentenced to death, the possibility that more may soon join them is good.Cases involving murder, drug trafficking, rape, and child abuse have seen dramatic increases.

A formerly shabby pooch in Montreal recently got a new look. The abandoned male pooch was discovered on a city street. A driver spotted the Cavalier King Charles and noticed he was grubby and had been desperately searching for scraps of food. Staffers from the Quebec Society for the Protection of Animals were notified. His dirt filled coat was far too thick and tangled. The staffers took him in and immediately went to work. They gave him a good scrub and started shaving. Before and after photos show a major transformation. When he was first rescued, it was nearly impossible to tell there was a dog underneath the mass of fur. The only indication a living thing was under there was a little black nose that could be spotted with a close look. With each swipe of the razor, the pooch looked more like his purebred self. Once the grooming efforts were wrapped up, a very handsome black and white Cavalier King Charles was unveiled. It is not known if the canine has been placed up for adoption yet.

The wild animal strolling through the area is very well known to wildlife experts and is referred to as P-22.The 4-year-old creature was outfitted with a GPS collar back in 2012. It was then that the mountain lion began frequenting Griffith Park after a 20 mile journey from the Santa Monica Mountain. On March 5th of this year, he was caught on camera exploring an upscale residential neighborhood. He sauntered down the street, alongside several parked cars. The neighborhood is approximately a half a mile away from Griffith Park. Authorities believe P-22 is the most urban mountain lion in the Southern portion of the state. A wildlife specialist in Los Angeles, Greg Randall suspects the reason behind P-22’s appearance in Hollywood Hills has to do with him searching for food. Another speculation is that P-22 is trying to find a mate. Whatever the cause of his suburban prowling may be, it doesn’t change the fact that local residents are terrified. One woman claimed she had a face to face encounter with P-22. Fortunately, the lady managed to get away from him unscathed.

A man in Michigan was recently apprehended by the FBI after posting selfies of himself on Facebook. A man in Michigan was recently apprehended by the FBI after posting self snapped photos of himself on Facebook. In the pictures that led to his arrest, 21-year-old Jules Bahler can be seen showing off a submachine gun. The problem is that authorities saw those social media images and recognized the firearm as it had reportedly been used in a bank robbery in Bay City the previous day. It’s unclear how exactly cops first found Bahler’s Facebook page. However it is known that a police sergeant was the first to take notice of the pictures and direct the FBI to the suspect’s social media account. Bahler has been accused of robbing three banks. The first two banks hit were in Pontiac, and Bahler allegedly handed those tellers notes to get the money. The final crime in Bay City was the only one that involved the use of the gun. That third robbery occurred on March 5th, which is also the same date the machine gun photo was posted to Bahler’s Facebook page, along with a caption that said the firearm was newly purchased. Once investigators deemed him a suspect, they pulled him over and found the machine gun in the vehicle, resting by Bahler’s feet. In a police interview, Bahler reportedly confessed to all three robberies.

A recent study asserts that girls who play with Barbie could suffer from stunted career aspirations. A recent study asserts that girls who play with Barbie dolls could suffer from stunted career aspirations. Mrs. Potato head, on the other hand, proved be a much better role model. During the research process, 37 girls aged between 4 and 7 years old were given one or the other to play with. Among those given a Barbie some were handed the doctor version, and others the fashion option. Not that it made a difference. After 5 minutes of play, all of the young girls were shown 10 images of potential occupations and were asked which ones they could do and which ones were possible for boys to pursue. The Barbie girls, regardless of how their doll was dressed, saw themselves as having far fewer career options than males. Visions for the future held by the Mrs. Potato head camp showed not only a greater range of possibilities, but more equality. Researchers say that it’s largely due to the sexualized nature of Barbie, and the social values it impresses upon young females. One of the study’s authors acknowledged that childhood development is complex, and a variety of factors come into play when the time comes to choose a career path.
Parents in Little Rock, Arkansas are shocked after learning a teacher accidentally displayed explicit scenes of herself in front of her class. Parents in Little Rock, Arkansas are shocked after learning a teacher accidentally displayed explicit scenes of herself in front of her class. Reports conflict on if the exhibit shown was a video or a still image as the school and embarrassed teacher claim, but one thing is certain…a major mistake was made. The teacher admitted that somehow the image got mixed in with her lesson plan. The inappropriate personal material was sent to the teacher's iCloud account and subsequently shown to the students via iPads in the classroom. Nicholas Tolerson, a father of one student, claimed his son came home and told him that he and his classmates at the Forest Heights Middle School had been shown images of the teacher performing a sex act. The teacher later admitted she and her fiancée were the two in the frame. The teacher even called Tolerson and other parents directly to apologize for the error. She also sent a note home to parents confirming the children witnessed something they never should have seen. Following the incident, the teacher was disciplined under the Arkansas Teacher Fair Dismissal Act, although it remains unclear if her employment was terminated or temporarily suspended.

By weight, spider silk is five times stronger than steel and three times stronger than Kevlar material, but producing a synthetic version that still retains the same properties has been challenging, until now. Scientists from several institutions around the world, including Utah State University and German company AMSilk, are all researching different ways to produce a synthetic form of spider silk. AMSilk has already met with commercial success by selling their spider silk protein in nonfiber applications to shampoo and cosmetics manufacturers.Harvesting the silk from spiders on a farm is not feasible, so in order to make it commercially available, scientists had to figure out a way to mass produce it in a lab. Methods of production range from using E. coli bacteria, to putting spider genes into silkworms and other hosts, resulting in not just the protein, but also the synthetic silk fiber strands.Axel H. Leimer a managing director from AMSilk is quoted as saying: "This is scalable technology. If someone ordered one ton, we could make it. We have already made a half a ton.” Leimer reportedly hopes that the synthetic spider silk protein will be used as a coating to make silicone breast implants safer, among other uses. ------------------------------------------------
