Goodbye Brooklyn, hello again Los Angeles! The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards are returning to the West Coast for one of the biggest pop culture events of the year. More than ever, the show will be jam-packed with powerhouse performances and appearances by some of the biggest names in music and Hollywood.

The VMAs will start off with a bang (literally!) when Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J open with the first performance of their smash hit “Bang Bang.” Others taking the stage to perform include 5 Seconds of Summer, Usher, Taylor Swift, Zedd, and DJ Mustard. Adam Levine — fresh off his honeymoon with wife Behati Prinsloo — will sing with Maroon 5, while Rita Ora and Iggy Azalea will perform their collab “Black Widow” live for the first time ever.

“It’s a great opportunity for hot blondes to stick up for each other,” Ora, 23, told MTV during rehearsals this week. “Me and Iggy are so excited about this song.” Just as exhilarated about performing is British crooner Sam Smith. “You guys heard? I AM SINGING ON THE VMAS ON SUNDAY,” he tweeted on Aug. 19. “Excuse me while I go sh-t myself in fear.” (Fifth Harmony will perform in the pre-show.)

With all due respect to the performers, however, the night will inevitably belong to Queen Bey. Beyonce has previously belted out her hits at the 2006, 2009, and 2011 VMAs, but this time around she will also be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, with an epic performance to accompany the honor.

“When it came time to choose the 2014 VMA recipient, one particular name stood out above the rest —global entertainer, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Beyonce,” MTV’s website read earlier this month. Besides the late Jackson, the coveted award has been given to Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Britney Spears, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys over the years.
