Germany To Be Nuclear-Free by 2022
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionFollow us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevisionGermany has decided to switch off all its nuclear power stations by 2022. The move is intended to turn Europe's largest economy into a frontrunner for creating renewable energy and jobs. Let's find out more.Time's running out for the Biblis nuclear power plant in Germany. It and the country's other 16 nuclear reactors will be closed by 2022. The Fukushima disaster in Japan led Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government to do a rapid policy U-turn, only nine months after Merkel said she was going to extend the plants' lifespan by over a decade. Now the government has decided to phase out nuclear over the next ten years. [Angela Merkel, German Chancellor]:"This path is a big challenge for Germany but it also means huge opportunities for future generations. We believe that our country can become a frontrunner for the creation of renewable energy and as the first large industrial nation, we can create such a change towards highly efficient and renewable energies, with all its opportunities for export, developments and technology which create jobs."The decision could still face opposition from utilities companies. But nuclear power has long been unpopular in Germany and is opposed by most voters.Just hours before the government made the decision - over 150 thousand people took to the streets of several German cities to march against atomic energy.Nuclear provided almost a quarter of Germany's overall power before the seven oldest stations were shut down in March in the wake of Japan's earthquake and tsunami. The country's Ethics Commission was also set up at that time to review urgently Germany's entire energy strategy - it's jointly led by Matthias Kleiner, who's in favour of a nuclear exit.

Survivors of Hiroshima Nuclear Bomb Seek Peace
At 8:15 a.m. on August 6th, 1945, the U.S. B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped the Hiroshima bomb. Thousands were killed instantly by a mix of shockwaves, heat rays and radiation. Sadae Kasaoka was only 12-years-old when the bomb hit. And while she herself survived the explosion and subsequent radiation, most of her friends did not. [Sadae Kasaoka, Atomic Bomb Survivor]: female (Japanese) "Their dreams, hopes and bodies were all killed by the bomb. (When they were burning the bodies), I felt like I could see their spirits. I want to live my life to make up for the part of theirs they couldn't. I feel that my role has become to live and tell everyone what a tragic and miserable situation it actually was." UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and U.S Ambassador Roos will attend this year’s 65th anniversary. [Stephen Leeper, Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation]: (English) “And having Ambassador Roos here, and Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General Ban Ki Moon come here for the first time ever. This is the first secretary general to ever come to this ceremony.” The number of survivors is rapidly dwindling. So those who remain are doing their best to keep the memories alive… along with their dream for a nuclear free world. [Tomiko Matsumoto, Atomic Bomb Survivor]:female (Japanese) "I think that the reason I have been able to live so long is so that I can tell the next generation about the equality of life and the importance of peace. That's my mission." Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, ending the military aggression that brought it into World War Two.

Experimental Nuclear Reactor Connected to National Power Grid
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevisionA new experimental nuclear reactor is up and running in China. It comes after decades of planning and research. Officials say it will allow uranium to be used more effectively, and is more environmentally friendly than many of the world's other nuclear plants.China's first experimental fast reactor was connected to the national power grid Thursday morning. Located near Beijing, it marks a new breakthrough in the application of fourth-generation nuclear power technology.Fast reactors are the cutting edge of advanced power generation. Most of the world's nuclear power plants use pressurized water reactors based on second-generation technology.Fast reactors allow uranium to be processed up to 60 times more effectively than before.[Xu Mi, China National Nuclear Corporation]: "With such a high efficiency, low grade uranium ores are worth being exploited. That means the uranium resources will be expanded by a thousand-fold."Another important feature of the fast reactor is that it can use nuclear waste generated by traditional reactors as an energy resource. It takes hundreds of thousands of years for nuclear waste generated by pressurized water reactor to fully decay and become harmless. In comparison, the fast reactor's waste decays in three or four hundred years, a time span the human race can more effectively control.[Xu Mi, China National Nuclear Corporation]: "The technique of safe storage of nuclear waste has been completely mastered. With the help of a stainless steel shell and a concrete shell, the nuclear waste it generates can be safely buried underground."China is now one of the few countries in the world to master this promising technology.

Germany Decides to Shut Down Its Nuclear Reactors
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevisionThe German government's decision to shut all nuclear reactors by 2022 may serve as an international example. German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes this will create huge opportunities for the future.Germany wants to shut down all its nuclear reactors by 2022, Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling coalition declared on Monday.Merkel says the decision means "huge opportunities for future generations."[Angela Merkel, German Chancellor]: "Step by step, we will abandon nuclear energy by the end of 2022. This path is a big challenge for Germany. We believe that our country can become a frontrunner for the creation of renewable energy and as the first large industrial nation, we can create such a change towards highly efficient and renewable energies, with all its opportunities for export, developments and technology which create jobs."The announcement means a policy reversal drawn up in a rush after the Fukushima disaster in Japan.Germany's coalition of Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and Free Democrats (FDP), sensitive to accusations it may increase dependence on highly polluting brown coal, said it planned to cut power use by 10 percent by 2020.It has further plans to expand the use of renewables such as wind and solar power.[Angela Merkel, German Chancellor]:"We believe that with these decisions, we have the opportunity to create the turnaround towards the electricity of the future. The German government and the coalition is ready to go down this path together and decisively."The proposal may be even more ambitious than the nuclear exit planned when the Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens were in power in 2000.It takes 8 of 17 nuclear plants offline now and six more by 2021.

Indian Government Says Nuclear Power Plant at Jaitapur will be Safe
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionFollow us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevisionAmidst fears of Japan's nuclear crisis and subsequent protests by activists, the Indian government assures foolproof safety at the proposed nuclear power plant at Jaitapur. The plant may host as many as six reactors making it the world's largest.India's federal Minister of Environment and Forest says safety systems at a proposed $10 billion nuclear plant will be tightened up. The plant is potentially the world's largest, and is set to be built in Jaitapur in the western state of Maharashtra. The minister spoke in New Delhi on Tuesday in the wake of violent protests against the plant.Clashes between protestors and police last week killed one person and injured at least 20 near the plant site. The Fukushima nuclear disaster has fueled anger over land acquisition and intensified fears of a similar disaster in India.India's government has reaffirmed its intent to scale up its nuclear power capacity. [Jairam Ramesh, Minister of Environment & Forest]:"Each reactor will have a standalone safety system, a standalone, dedicated operation and maintenance system. This is a very major step forward."A high-level body, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, met on Tuesday to draw up plans to set operational safety standards for nuclear plants.[V. Narayanasamy, Junior Minister, Prime Minister's Secretariat]:"CM (Chief Minister) Maharashtra and NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited), assured the Prime Minister that all efforts will be made to engage local communities and address their fears and concerns in a credible manner."During a December visit to India by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the two countries signed a framework agreement for two next generation 1,650-megawatt EPR reactors at Jaitapur.

Hundreds Protest Against Nuclear Power in Hong Kong
For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevisionAnd anti-nuclear power protests continued over the weekend. In Hong Kong, hundreds of protesters took to the streets, urging Hong Kong's leaders to stop importing nuclear energy from nearby plants in mainland China. Some 460 people in Hong Kong marched in an anti-nuclear rally on Sunday, protesting against the increased use of nuclear power imported from mainland China.Organized by the Greenpeace environmental group, the protesters marched to the Central Government office building.Activists from various political parties and environmental groups demanded that the Hong Kong government halt a nuclear expansion plan coming before the legislative council at the end of April. The government plans to increase the use of nuclear energy, imported from mainland China, from 23 percent to 50 per cent by 2020.That rings alarm bells for environmentalists.[Chu Hon-keung, Environmentalist]:"This not only affects the environment, but the next generation also bears a high risk. Especially in the future when Hong Kong will be surrounded by about 16 more nuclear plants, built in the Pearl River Delta. With such a high population, the pressure and risk are really high."There has been a rise in the number of protests against nuclear power, following the disaster at the Daiichi nuclear plant at Fukushima, Japan, which was crippled in the recent massive earthquake and tsunami.Nobuo Tanaka, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency recently suggested that the events at Fukushima would increase pressure for a reduction in nuclear power usage.

Chinese Authorities Suspend Nuclear Power Plant Approvals
For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevisionChinese authorities have suspended approval of planned nuclear power plants. It’s a reaction to the ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan. The Chinese regime has been expanding its nuclear power industry at a speed that some experts find alarming, with a possible eight-fold increase in nuclear power production by the year 2020 predicted. In reaction to the ongoing nuclear crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant, authorities in China are suspending approvals for planned nuclear power plants. The Chinese regime is developing nuclear energy at a rapid pace and officially plans to increase capacity to 40 gigawatts by 2020. Yet some officials have said that figure may be raised to 80 gigawatts—that’s eight times the current capacity in one decade.Experts have warned that China, also susceptible to earthquakes, could experience a similar crisis to the one happening now in Japan, if it does not slow down the pace of its nuclear development.[Han Xiaoping, Energy Net Consultancy]:"With such high-speed development, I think it's difficult for the government to supervise properly. The plants' construction and design, as well as their operation, could all have a lot of problems. So perhaps China needs to slow down, bring this speed within a controllable range, and develop it gradually."A dozen nuclear plants are currently being built in China, and a dozen more are planned.Chinese authorities have promised to cut carbon emissions by 40 percent per unit of GDP by the year 2020. Yet the country still relies on coal, the ‘dirtiest’ of the fossil fuels, for 70 percent of its electricity needs. With renewables still not a viable option for large-scale power generation, authorities are looking to nuclear power to lower China’s emissions.
