Loose Walk – Dexter Gordon 1964 This was recorded in a small Cafe in Amersfoort in the Netherlands. He was backed up by a Swiss trio with George Gruntz piano, Guy Pederson bass and drummer Daniel Humair. Gordon (1923-1990) was born and grew up in Los Angeles, where his father was a doctor who counted Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton among his patients. He played clarinet from the age of 13, before switching to saxophone (initially alto, then tenor) at 15. While still at school, he was playing in bands with such contemporaries as Chico Hamilton and Buddy Collette. During 1943-44 he featured in the Louis Armstrong and Fletcher Henderson bands, before joining Billy Eckstine. By 1945, Gordon had left the Eckstine band and was resident in New York, where he was performing and recording with Charlie Parker, as well as recording under his own name. Many would characterise Gordon's sound as being 'large' and spacious (a feature partially owed to his big'n'tall physical stature, 6 feet 5 inches), and his tendency to play behind the beat is discernible. One of his major influences was Lester Young. Gordon, in turn, was an early influence on John Coltrane during the 1940s and 1950s. Coltrane's playing, however, during his early period from the mid to late '50s or early '60s influenced Gordon's playing from then onward. Similarities in their styles include their clear, strong, metallic tones, their tendencies to bend up to high notes, and their abilities to single-tongue and still swing. One of Gordon's idiosyncrasies was to recite the lyrics of each ballad before playing it.

This is one of these amazing clips found in the archives of the Dutch Broadcasting Company and indeed brought out on TV a few years ago. Here in 1964 we see well dressed and good looking tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon at the height of his creative career playing for a Dutch TV program. The setting is done in Restaurant "De Poort Wal" in the city of Amersfoort. Dexter walks off the street, into the pub, gives his coat and hat to the bartender, walks on the set, gets his unpacked saxophone from under the piano and introduces the next tune. Backed by a Swiss trio lead by pianist George Gruntz Dexter plays Nights of Tunisia. Listen to this man's power, tone and of course original ideas. A big bravo for the Dutch researchers who were able to bring back these musical bebop treasures.

Des trois légendaires frères Heath, Percy le contrebassiste et Jimmy le saxophoniste, Albert le batteur est le plus jeune. Ayant débuté discographiquement parlant avec John Coltrane, Al « Tootie » Heath fut le compagnon de route de magnifiques aventures auprès de JJ Johnson, Cedar Walton, Bobby Timmons, Dexter Gordon. On l’a très souvent entendu auprès d’Herbie Hancock, de Yusef Lateef et bien évidemment avec les Heath Brothers. Un jeu tout en nuances, en couleurs et un tempo sans faille. Le seul instrument inventé par le jazz, si l’on exclue le banjo qui trouve ses racines en Afrique, est sans aucun doute la batterie, l’invention d’un homme orchestre pour tout vous dire, un homme de cirque. La batterie réunie les éléments des percussions d’une fanfare, la grosse caisse, la caisse claire, les cymbales, etc. La batterie est le cœur d’un orchestre de jazz. C’est elle avant tout autre instrument qui génère le beat, le tempo, le swing. Voilà pourquoi après Daniel Humair, Christian Vander, Bobby Durham et avant Pete La Rocca annoncé prochainement, les plus grands batteurs du monde sont toujours les bienvenus au Duc des Lombards.

Le pianiste transalpin est entouré de musiciens exceptionnels : André Ceccarelli, batteur à la renommée internationale, accompagnateur des plus grands (de Stan Getz à Dexter Gordon, en passant par Chick Corea et Claude Nougaro…), Darryl Hall, contrebassiste de Donald Byrd, Hank Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Tom Harrell…

Antonio FARAO (p), Dominique DI PIAZZA (b), André CECCARELLI (dms)Encensé par Kenny Kirkland et Herbie Hancock, le pianiste italien nous présente « Woman’s Perfume », hommage au compositeur Armando Trovajoli. A ses côtés, des musiciens exceptionnels : André Ceccarelli, batteur de renommée internationale qui a accompagné les plus grands (Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Chick Corea…), et Dominique Di Piazza, bassiste de John McLaughlin. Qu’ajouter de plus ? Leur musique est magnifique !

Michel SARDABY (p), Wayne DOCKERY (b), John BESTCH (dms) Michel Sardaby envisage le jazz comme un langage, comme une culture à partager avec le plus grand nombre. Pianiste remarqué dès les années 50, on le retrouve comme leader ou accompagnateur aux côtés de Kenny Clarke, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Coleman, Johnny Griffin, Clark Terry, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Art Farmer, Philly Joe Jones… Celui qui a participé à rendre le jazz légendaire a à cœur de le rendre plus que jamais populaire. Venez en être les témoins !

Kirl Lightsey est l’accompagnateur des plus grands. Son parcours est impressionnant : de Dexter Gordon à Chet Baker en passant par Freddie Hubbard. Sideman recherché, souvent présent au Duc des Lombards, c’est en tant que leader que nous l’accueillons cette fois-ci. Pour cette occasion unique, il a convié Ricky Ford le 15, Stéphane Belmondo le 16 et Jerry Gonzales le 17. Que la fête commence !
