Is the story of the New World. On his second journey in 1493, Christopher Columbus brought the first sugar cane to the Caribbean. Cane was grown to meet the burgeoning demand for sugar in Europe. Sugar, and eventually rum, would figure dramatically in the trade between the old world and the new. Sugar and the sugar economy of the West Indies would ruin men and make men rich, would send governments to war, foster privateering and piracy, and would give rise to the infamous Triangular Trade, so called because of the shape of the three legs of the journey. The first was from Europe to Africa where goods were exchanged for slaves. The second, or the 'middle passage' was the transportation of slaves to the Americas. The third and final leg of the journey was the transport of goods -- sugar, rum, tobacco and cotton -- from the Americas back to Europe. It was, arguably, the engine that drove the world economy at that time. The by-product of refining the cane into sugar is molasses, and it was the distillation of the molasses that gave the world rum beginning in the 16 th century. Dark, treacly brown molasses mixed with water was fermented into a crude liqueur, and finally distilled into a unique spirit that still retains its mystery and romance. The romance of rum was no mystery to the "founders" of Bermuda. In 1609, Sir George Somers, on his way to rescue the withering colony at Jamestown, came dramatically aground on the deserted islands of Bermuda. All survived and many took solace in a dram of celebratory rum, or as it was recorded "comfortable waters". Three years later the good ship, Plough, arrived with Bermuda's first true settlers.

Bobby Hebb, né Robert Von Hebb, à Nashville au Tennessee, le 26 juillet 1938 et mort le 3 août 2010 dans la même ville, est un auteur et chanteur célèbre pour son enregistrement de Sunny en 1966. Le 23 novembre 1963, le lendemain de l'assassinat de John F. Kennedy, le frère de Bobby Hebb est poignardé mortellement lors d'un combat à l'extérieur d'un night club de Nashville. Hebb est anéanti par les deux évènements et cherche le réconfort dans l'écriture. Sunny a été enregistré par, entre autres,Marvin Gaye, Boney M, Cher, Georgie Fame, Johnny Rivers, Frank Sinatra avec Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald (1970), the Electric Flag, James Brown avec Marva Whitney, The Four Seasons, Christophe Willem, the Four Tops, Richard Anthony, Wilson Pickett, Les McCann, Stanley Turrentine (1966), Johnny "Hammond" Smith (1966) Henry Cain (1967), The Young Holt Trio (1966), Jerome Richardson (1968), Jack McDuff avec David "Fathead" Newman (1968), Jose Feliciano (1968), Stevie Wonder (1968) et Dusty Springfield. Le couplet et refrain de Sunny se termine avec un motif de quatre notes tiré du thème de James Bond pour James Bond 007 contre Dr. No.Le succès de la chanson a été immédiat, ce qui a eu pour conséquence pour Hebb une tournée avec les Beatles. Sunny du groupe Girl's Generation, durant leur première tournée en Asie.Bobby Hebb a sorti une version disco de sa chanson en 1976, avec un certain succès. . En France, elle a été adaptée en 1966 par Jacques Plante pour Richard Anthony. Christophe Willem, gagnant du télé-crochet Nouvelle Star, a proposé aux téléspectateurs sa propre version de Sunny dans une interprétation jugée d'assez bonne qualité pour être éditée en single (il n'était jamais arrivé qu'une prestation de prime-time de cette émission fasse l'objet d'une édition discographique).
