Burundi still struggling to overcome civil war - 24 May 08
Burundi is struggling to recover from a civil war that began back in 1993 and has seen more than 200,000 people killed. The standoff has been between the Tutsi majority, who dominate the government, and Hutu rebels, who want a greater say in the country's affairs. The international community brokererd a power-sharing deal back in 2003 but violence has continued and government forces are still fighting the last active rebel group, Forces for National Liberation. As Mohammed Adow reports, the ceasefire has come too late for many.

Burundi urged to demobilise child soldiers - 25 May 08
Military leaders have fuelled Burundi's 10 year armed conflict by recruiting and abducting children, destroying their childhood and their future. Mohammed Adow, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Burundi, reports on the extent of child soldiering and the process of demobilising child soldiers in the context of conflict and poverty. Meanwhile, both government and opposition forces have been accused of enlisting children as young as 11 to fight their cause.

Burundi set for one-name vote
The central African nation of Burundi is set to hold its first presidential election since the end of its nearly 16-year-long civil war between ethnic Tutsis and Hutus.Normally the poll would be praised by the international community. However, there is one problem: the vote ballot consists of just one name. The incumbent president, Pierre Nku-run-ziza, is the only candidate after six opposition candidates all decided to boycott the poll, alleging fraud in earlier local elections.Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb reports from Bujumbura, Burundi's capital.[June 28, 2010]

Christian Aid: Creating unity in post conflict Burundi
The small central African country of Burundi was devastated by a seven year civil war which ended in 2000. Now church and development groups are working with the population to heal the wounds left by the conflict. Here the Most Reverend Bernard Ntahoturi, the Archbishop of Burundi, discusses some of the most pressing challenges facing the country, including the distribution of farmland following the return of huge numbers of refugees. He also describes how the Anglican Church -- supported by Christian Aid -- has established a project to plant six million trees, bringing people together from all sectors of Burundian society with the aim of creating unity in a traumatised country. visit www.christianaid.org.uk

Burundi, Muyange: Bednet distributions
Distributed by UNICEF. Gatumba has a population of 25,000 and is located in a malaria endemic region. 1,500 cases of malaria are reported per month. 90% of children under 2 do not sleep under a bednet. Gatumba does not have a hospital. The 10,000 LLINs that comprise the Gatumba distribution will ensure blanket coverage of the village in one go. All areas of Gatumba received nets, namely: Kinyana I and II, Rukaramo, Waribondo, Muyange, Mushasha, Gaharawe and Vugizo.

Burundi, Rutana Province: Bednet Distribution
20,000 nets were distributed in a series of related distributions to achieve blanket (universal) coverage of all sleeping spaces in Mpinga-Kayove Commune in Rutana Province. Approximately 40,000 people are protected by these nets. Universal coverage has been shown to cause a dramatic reduction in the malaria-carrying mosquito population as the mosquito dies if it is unable to get a blood meal every 10 days. When net usage is combined with other anti-malaria activities, such as removing stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, the impact on the health of the protected community can be dramatic.

Gunmen kill foreign aid workers in Burundi.
A mourning ceremony in northern Burundi for two foreign aid workers killed by gunmen. The Croatian nun and Italian doctor were working at a psychiatric clinic. Gunmen broke into the compound and forced the Croatian nun to give them money, before shooting her dead. They then kidnapped the Italian doctor and made him drive them away, later killing him. (SOUNDBITE) (Kirundi) BURUNDIAN NUN, SISTER ELIZABETH HATEGEKIMANA, SAYING: "The problem started moments after we finished our dinner and went to watch television. A few minutes later we lost our electricity connection and as we were trying to figure out what the problem was, we realised all our neighbours had electricity." Although the landlocked African country has been plagued by insecurity this year, the killings on Sunday night were the first to target foreign aid workers since 2007. At a news conference the Burundi Army Chief said those behind the killings had been arrested and were helping police with their investigations. Nick Rowlands, Reuters.
