Αν και η Μέργια ενσωματώθηκαν στην Ρωσία τον 17ο αιώνα, οι μύθοι και οι παραδόσεις τους επέζησαν μέχρι τους σύγχρονους απογόνους τους. Οι δύο άνδρες ξεκινούν ένα ταξίδι με αυτοκίνητο εκατοντάδων χιλιομέτρων κατά μήκος των συνόρων της χώρας. Μαζί τους, δύο μικρά πουλιά σε ένα κλουβί. Στον δρόμο, όπως συνηθίζεται στους Μέργια, ο Μίρον μοιράζεται προσωπικές αναμνήσεις από την συζυγική ζωή με τον φίλο του. Όσο πλησιάζουν όμως στις όχθες της ιερής λίμνης, όπου θα αποχωριστούν για πάντα το νεκρό σώμα, ανακαλύπτει πως δεν ήταν ο μόνος που αγάπησε την Τάνια...
