Alan Alda: The Meaning of Laughter ... and Other Things 5/6
Imagination is an important ingredient in success. “As a kid, I would just lie on my back and look up at the sky and see the clouds go by and I'd look for faces in the clouds but I would spend hours doing that. I think that was some of the foundation now for what, for my imagination, you know, I have a very good useful imagination. It stands me in good stead.”For more than half a century, Alan Alda has been in show business. As an actor, writer and director of plays, movies, books and television programs, he has charmed, inspired, informed and challenged his audiences.

Alan Alda: The Meaning of Laughter ... and Other Things 1/6
In Alan Alda’s view “(MASH) tried not to trivialize the real life experiences of the people we were playing, and one of the best things for us was real people had lived those lives, so there was always a sense I think that no matter how silly we got, there were actual people who had suffered through that real experience and you had to be silly in ways that didn't ignore their lives, most of the time I think we did that.”For more than half a century, Alan Alda has been in show business. Alan Alda: The Meaning of Laughter ... and Other Things 2/6
His years of working on Scientific American Frontiers has helped Mr. Alda to understand that “It’s not that science replaces mystery with knowledge or some intellectual crisp killing slicing and dicing. Every time a mystery is explored and we think we understand that mystery better, there's a hundred new mysteries so science is not a way of eliminating mystery, it’s a way of producing more. And we'll never, I don't know if we'll ever get to the bottom.”For more than half a century, Alan Alda has been in show business. As an actor, writer and director of plays, movies, books and television programs, he has charmed, inspired, informed and challenged his audiences.

The skills of acting and of living can be very similar, Mr. Alda suggests: “A few years ago it occurred to me that if I would listen to another person in life now, I'm not talking about on the stage, just in life, that I would listen to another person as though they were possibly my salvation, not that I had to wait until they were done so I could say this great thing I had to say, but really let them land on me, and change me, unless I let them change me, almost like were willing to let them change me, I wasn't really listening, so that I as much as I can remember to do that, now, I try to let the other person in and see what they're really trying to tell me. And it’s not always what their words are telling me, you know.”For more than half a century, Alan Alda has been in show business. As an actor, writer and director of plays, movies, books and television programs, he has charmed, inspired, informed and challenged his audiences.

Alan Alda: The Meaning of Laughter ... and Other Things 6/6
Morality is a hard thing to talk about because everybody has their own standard, and you could have a really good fight about what'’s moral and what'’s not.In fact, we have it every day.You could also have a very good conversation.Yes, that's right, if only we could have a good conversation about it and try to get somewhere together. That would be really nice, that would be actually fun; It would be much more fun that the wrestling matches that we watch on cable television.”For more than half a century, Alan Alda has been in show business.
