Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World review. Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World for XBox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. My gaming knowledge is not infallible. There are bits and pieces of gaming history that I'm missing, whether they're a result of Geography or... well, just not getting around to them. So when Sega goes through the trouble of bundling half of the Monster World sextilogy (that sounds kinda dirty, but I THINK it's right) together for this generation's download services... well, that's kinda spiffy. I, too, can live through the heroics of Wonder Boy in Monster Land (and curse the controls, but that's another show), the similar-but-graphically-upgraded Wonder Boy in Monster World, and the "who says it has to be a boy" Shantae-esque fantasy of Monster World IV. (Released 7 years before Shantae, mind.) Y'know what Adventure Island needed? Swords. And less Takahashi Meijin going all 16/sec all over the place. Stone axes just can't compare to genuine swords and sorcery action, even if the platforming is similarly fluffy. Direct from the arcades to the Sega Master System to the XBox 360 comes Wonder Boy in Monster Land, a testament to anthropomorphic animal entrepreneurs. Oh, yeah, and a Wonder Boy saving the princess after being given a sword by an old man living in a cave^H^H^H^Htree. Wonder Boy in Monster World review. Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Wonder Boy in Monster World, part of Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World for XBox Live Arcade. Oh, the difference one word makes. And, well, a couple more iterations of the game itself. This is the fifth Monster World game, though even it would refuse to tell you so, and it revisits the basic mechanics of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, but with all the grindy arcade bits taken out for you. How convenient! Sporting an overhauled inventory and magic system, bigger bosses, cuter sprites, and the occasional ocarina lesson, Wonder Boy in Monster World shows us just how much more interesting stuff you can pack into 8 more bits. CGRundertow MONSTER WORLD IV for Xbox 360 Video Game Review
Monster World IV review. Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Monster World IV, part of Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World for XBox Live Arcade. It looks like Shantae. It plays like Shantae. It sounds... well, more twangy than even Shantae could get, thanks to the Genesis sound hardware. But Monster World IV isn't Shantae... it was Shantae BEFORE Shantae was Shantae. Have I said Shantae enough? I'm hoping that, by repeating the name of a fantastic action platformer with which you should be familiar, you'll equate it with this, a fantastic action platformer in much the same vein that we, here in the states, haven't had the opportunity to enjoy until just now. Shantae.
