This year’s 42nd annual international New York Marathon brought more than 40,000 runners from around the world, setting a record number in participants. NTD’s Elle Bakish has more.It took him two hours, five minutes and six seconds to run through New York’s five boroughs. The winner of this year’s 42nd New York City Marathon is 30-year-old Kenya native Geoffrey Mutai.Not too far behind, completing the 26-mile course in just 2 hours, 23 minutes and 15 seconds, 24-year-old Firehiwaot Dado of Ethiopia.[Elle Bakish, NTD News Reporter]:“And, while it may be cold here in New York, that didn’t stop hundreds of fans from coming out to cheer on who for them may be their personal winner.”For many attending today’s marathon, the event was about more than just a shot at first place.Proud parents of New York marathon runner, Eugene Karaffa can be spotted at several races throughout the year.Their son runs with hopes of helping others make their dreams come true.[Linda Karaffa, Mother of Eugene Karaffa]:“He did make a wish and there were 12 young men that died in the high school area for various reasons. He ran for make a wish and raised 7000 dollars and helped to send a kid to Alaska for the Make-a-wish foundation.”For this New Jersey family, they’re excited to see their dad, a first time marathon participant, achieve a dream he’s had for a long time.[Karen Lorenz, Wife of John Lorenz]:“I guess it was on his bucket list of things he’s always wanted to do…His diet did change, he was running, he had a pattern of when he ran. On the weekend he ran 22 miles. Everything changed. He would get up extra early to come in the city to train, we’re very, very, proud…Go John!”Others were running with hopes of breaking world records...

What was once an old subway line is now an attraction site visited by many. With a new section opening this month, the park has now doubled in size.High Line park- Best known as the "Lifeline of New York" located on Manhattan's west side, has just undergone a significant extension.The park opened on June 9th. It has attracted 4 million people in the last two years.It's uniquely designed 30 feet above the ground on an old freight railway track.The rails were almost torn down back in 1999. But "Friends of the High Line" a private organization, fought for its preservation.[Dayna Sherman, Director of Public Programs]:"The city of New York owns the park. Friends of the High Line manages and operates it on a day to day basis and as part of that we are responsible for over 70% of the annual maintenance costs. So we maintain the beautiful plants, we pick up all the trash, and we also run lots of public programs."The park runs from Gansevoort Street to West 30th street [Park Visitor]:"It's raised which is great because it's a lot more breezy. And the other thing that I love about it- it's a lot more walking orientated, I find that a lot of other parks are overwhelmed by joggers and roller bladders and stuff."There is a lawn for visitors to relax, and on a hot day, there are ways to cool down. [Park Visitor]:"It's the water back there, they have a little stream that's running -- it's only about half an inch deep but it was cool."And what's a park without wildlife? This model made of stainless steel and wood provides shelter for birds flying around the park.The High Line's transformation from freight railway to New York hot spot makes it a true hidden gem of the city.Linda Nguyen, NTD News, New York

The "Guardian Angels", a group fighting against crime, takes to the streets of New York City. NTD's Linda Winn joins them on patrol.Not every hero wears a cape.These men are patrolling the streets of New York City to protect residents everyday.They are called the "Guardian Angels" and their mission is to "safeguard neighborhoods, and cyberspace from bullying, gangs, and violence."Many New York police officers who retire are not replaced. Since 2001 the number of officers on payroll in New York City has gone down from about 40,000 to 34,000.The "Guardian Angels" are volunteering to fill the gap.They have been credited with making thousands of citizens arrests and fiscal interventions.At their finest hour, they were able to arrest drug dealers.That was in the mid 80's-- a time when crack cocaine was notorious in the city.[Curtis Sliwa, "Guardian Angels" Founder]:"We literally were arresting people and pulling them out of the vestibules of buildings, the foyers of buildings with weight. What I mean by weight is thousands of vials of crack cocaine that they were distributing into the streets because they were the wholesalers feeding the retailers in the street."One councilman is urging New Yorkers to get involved with the group.[Peter Vallone, Queens Councilman]:"When I say get involved I don't mean run up and stop a crime that's in progress. I mean be the eyes and ears of the police department. Get out there and report on conditions that you see whether it be graffiti or something worse. Get out there.
