Thelma Houston est née le 7 mai 1943 à Leland, aux Etats-Unis. Au cours de son enfance, la famille déménage pour habiter à Long Beach en Californie, où Thelma suit sa scolarité. Après s'être mariée, avoir eu des enfants et divorcé, Thelma se lance dans une carrière dans la santé. Parallèlement, elle rejoint The Art Reynolds Singers, avec qui elle enregistre et signe chez Capitol. Marc Gordon, manager de Fifth Dimension, impressionné par sa voix, lui fait signer un contrat chez Dunhill Records, chez qui elle sort son premier album Wildflower, en 1969. Thelma signe alors sur la Motown, le label de référence R&B soul. Elle enchaîne les singles et les albums au cours des années 70, se taillant une certaine notoriété. Elle travaille en tant que choriste sur un album de Jermaine Jackson, My Name Is Jermaine, qui cartonne les charts. Elle traverse les années 80 et 90, en sortant quelques albums et en reprenant bon nombre de standards comme Don't Leave Me This Way ou Out of My Hands, et en participant à différentes bandes originales de films.
