Chinese activist Chen calls for democracy
A call for democracy in China. Blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng tells the Council on Foreign Relations in New York that he is optimistic about the possibility of reform in China and plans to return home. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) ACTIVIST CHEN GUANGCHENG SAYING: "Nobody can stop the progress of history. I don't care if it is a central government, the central government wants to move forward, ahead or backwards, it's going to be forcible forward. You know Marx said that productive forces determine productive relationships so if the central government wants to do it of course they can do it but it will take time and it will need support from the people." Chen said that he is still concerned for the safety of his family. After four years in jail on what he and his supporters say were trumped-up charges designed to end his activism, Chen was released in 2010 and put under house arrest. In 2005, Chen accused officials of forcing women to have late-term abortions and sterilization's to comply with China's strict family-planning policies. He was charged with whipping up a crowd that disrupted traffic and damaged property. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters

Why China's Leaders Secretly Welcome US Pressure on Chen Guangcheng
For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2CChina AnalysisWith blind Chinese lawyer Chen Guangcheng now said to be under US protection in Beijing, all eyes are on the US government as to what's going to happen next. There are already calls for President Barack Obama to protect Chen, and take a stand for human rights. The conventional wisdom about bringing up prominent human rights cases is that it will embarrass the Chinese leadership and make it harder for US-China relations. But NTD Senior China Analyst Zhang Tianliang says Chen's case is different. He says that if Obama brings up human rights, it will actually help Chinese leaders—and the US as well. That is, by bringing up Chen's case, Obama could help Chinese leaders Wen Jiabao and Hu Jintao bring down a powerful political enemy—the regime's security chief, Zhou Yongkang. Zhou is implicated in numerous cases of abuse of Chinese citizens, including Chen Guangcheng.[Zhang Tianliang, NTD Senior China Analyst]"Also I think Obama may not understand, that in China now, the Chinese government is not united, basically split. And I think that Wen Jiabao and Hu Jintao have the intention to remove Zhou Yongkang from the Standing Committee of the Politburo."Zhou is also the head the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, or the PLAC. It's an agency within the Party that controls both the police and the court system. The PLAC orchestrates the suppression of dissidents and activists, including Chen Guangcheng.Wen Jiabao and Hu Jintao are currently locked in a power battle against Zhou and his political allies. They've already taken down Zhou's main protégé, Chongqing's former Communist Party Chief Bo Xilai, and are poised to bring down Zhou too.Zhang Tianliang says if Obama takes a strong stance for Chen Guangcheng now, he'll actually be doing Wen and Hu a favor.

Beijing Newspaper Apologizes On Criticizing Chen Guangcheng and Gary Locke
For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.comFollow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevisionAdd us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2COn Friday, several newspapers controlled by Beijing Party Secretary Lu Qi, such as Beijing Daily, Beijing Times and Beijing News, published editorials criticizing blind Chinese legal activist Chen Guangcheng and US Ambassador Gary Locke for attempting to help him. Then at midnight, Beijing News published a strange apology on its Sina Weibo microblog account, which read, “In the still of the deep night, removing that mask of insincerity, we say to our true selves, ‘I am sorry.’ Goodnight.” These lines appeared above a photo of a smoking clown standing alone outside a circus tent. The post remained online for 24 hours and was forwarded nearly 10,000 times before being removed. Many believed it was an apology for the Friday editorials, which had provoked very negative reactions from the public.Chinese social scholar Zhang Jian says there may be a specific reason why the microblog post stayed up for a full 24 hours.[Zhang Jian, Chinese Social Scholar]:“All the signs show the CCP’s different factions are competing against each other over the Chen Guangcheng incident. Officials on the side of the Political and Judiciary Committee might want Chen to leave for America. Wen Jiabao might want Chen to stay in China to promote institutional reform. That microblog post stayed online for some time probably because the officials of the latter group were in charge.”Arts critic Mark Feeney pointed out that the clown picture in the Sina post was a famous photo by photographer Bruce Davidson, appearing in his book entitled, “Circus”. Chinese netizens believed the photo of the sad-looking clown was being used as a metaphor.
