Eastenders actress Barbara Windsor has been granted the Freedom of the City of London. The soap favourite, who made her West End debut at the age of 13, is also renowned for her role in the Carry On films. Born in Shoreditch, the 72-year-old actress said she was thrilled to be given the key: "I am a true, true Londoner. I love London and I love it with a passion and I'm just so honoured", she said. It is believed that the first Freedom was presented in 1237 and there are a number of rights traditionally associated with Freemen. Asked whether Barbara knew of her rights, she said: "I've heard I can get rat-a**ed and I won't get nicked, but the tragedy is I don't drink anymore". Barbara, who filmed her final scenes as Peggy Mitchell last month, will be appearing in the Dick Whittington pantomime at the Bristol Hippodrome later this year.
