The organization's name was officially changed to the Massage Therapy Foundation by action of its Board of Trustees in February 2004.At its inception, the Foundation was established as a 501 [c]3, tax-exempt, public charity that was able to receive tax deductible donations (as allowed by law) and serve the profession of therapeutic massage and bodywork as an organization funding massage therapy related research projects, community service programs and scholarships to students enrolled in formal massage therapy educational programs and faculty members in massage therapy education programs wishing to enhance their teaching skills. Initially, the governing body of the Foundation was a "mirror board" of the AMTA. In 1998, a separately elected and independent, 11-member Board of Trustees was seated and continues to serve as the governing body of the Foundation. The present officers of the Foundation include a President, two (2) Vice Presidents and eight (8) additional Trustees-- four of whom are public members, four are members of the profession and two are representatives from the AMTA Board of Directors.
