Queen's Mercury remembered 20 years on
EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL He once said he didn't want to be a star, he wanted to be a legend. Two decades since his untimely death of Aids, it seems Queen frontman Freddie Mercury did just that. The music and celebrity of one of the greatest showmen Britain has ever produced is very much alive today. The band wrote and recorded such hits as "Who Wants To Live Forever?", "We Will Rock You", and "Bohemian Rhapsody". 20 years ago on November 27, 1991 Mercury was laid to rest. He died at the age of 45, one day after finally admitting he had Aids. The outpouring of grief was evident in the floral tributes that were paid to the singer from fans and those in the record industry - Elton John, Dave Clark and Queen guitarist Brian May. Last month, May and drummer Roger Taylor, the surviving members of the band, collected an "Icons" award from the American organisation BMI - or Broadcast Music Inc. They were given an award for their songwriting which according to the organisation inspired a generation of music makers. SOUNDBITE: Brian Man, Queen Guitarist, saying (English): "We were boys who got to live out our dreams and Freddie was exceptional, there's no doubt about it." SOUNDBITE: Roger Taylor, Queen Drummer, saying (English): "It's amazing really considering we lost Freddie twenty years ago. It's great to still be sort of part of the wallpaper." But Mercury's legend is living on in the form of an upcoming biopic. Screenwriter Peter Morgan who penned "The Last King of Scotland" and "The Queen" will turn his hands at the rock genre. And playing the irreverent frontman will be "Borat" and "Bruno" star Sacha Baron Cohen. The surviving members of Queen will oversee the musical content of the film which will feature both original Queen music and Mercury solo music. Cindy Martin, Reuters

Members of "Nirvana" look back 20 years
The surviving members of the iconic band Nirvana sat down to discuss the 20th Anniversary of their groundbreaking album "Nevermind." Band members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, were joined by producer Butch Vig for a rare Q&A session, which was hosted by Jon Stewart. The two-hour interview session was recorded on Saturday September 24, marking the 20th anniversary of the seminal album, that literally changed the landscape for rock music. Among the questions asked was whether "Nevermind" and the hit single/anthem, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" would be as powerful today as it was then. (SOUNDBITE) Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl saying (English): "We had the conversation recently because we were talking about analog recordings. We made "Nevermind" just recorded to tape. What would "Nevermind" sound like if it was recorded to pro tools? What would it sound like if the vocals were tuned?" Twenty years later the band's influence remains strong, despite the loss of frontman and generational icon Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994 from a self-inflected gunshot wound. A special "Nevermind"'s 20th anniversary album is being re-issued by Universal Music. John Russell, Reuters.

Cambodia Sentences Thai National to 20 Years
A Cambodian military court sentenced a Thai man to 20 years in prison. He was charged for planting landmines at the Cambodia-Thailand border in February last year.A Thai national has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in Cambodia. In a hearing last week, Suphap Vong Pakna confessed to planting at least five explosive devices along the Cambodia-Thailand border, saying Thai soldiers paid him to do so.Pakna’s lawyer says his client received a fair trial.[Sam Sokong, Vong Prakna’s Atttorney]: (Khmer, probably male)"I think he is getting a fair judgment according to the evidence and his confession, because the court reduced the jail term from 30 to life imprisonment to 20 years in prison based on our terror law, article 75."The 39-year-old was arrested in February of last year after he allegedly entered Cambodian territory and laid landmines.A Thai investigation reportedly found Russian-made landmines in the area which they say were recently planted and of a type that Thai soldiers have never used.Thai authorities said the findings suggested that Cambodia may have been guilty of breaking the 1997 Ottawa Treaty, which bans signatories from using anti-personnel mines.Cambodia, however, dismissed the accusation, saying any landmines in the area were remnants of the three-decade war.The group Landmine Monitor says mined border areas between Cambodia and Thailand have the highest concentration of landmines in Cambodia.

Bingaman hanging up his hat after current term
senator jeff bingaman announces he's retiring at the end of his term. that quickly created a flurry of reaction and speculation on what's next for new mexico's political landscape.. eddie garcia starts off our team coverage of tonight's big story. many say bingamans retirement is going to leave a huge hole in the senate both from his experience and his influence. "it just seems like the right time and that's why i'm doing it now." it's the only explanation u.s senator jeff bingaman is offering about his retirement but already, those who have been in his shoes, are guessing what's influencing his decision. it seemed to me, knowing about what is going on the senate, that his life has become frustrating, to say the least - he may not say that, but i think it was ... his committee did good work and didn't get a chance to present it because other things took precedent. fellow democratic u.s. senator tom udall regards bingaman as a close friend. i am going to miss jeff very much and when i first heard yesterday, it just hit me. he says this year is crucial knowing it'g bingaman's last in the senate. we will work with him very carefully for a strategy to make sure new mexico is protected and new mexico gets the fair share of federal dollars that come our way. republican congressman steve pierce said: "for more than three decades, he has worked tirelessly as a public servant. it has been and continues to be a privilege to call jeff my friend and colleague. i look forward to working alongside him in his last two years serving the people of new mexic" i just think senator bingaman is finding out he wants to do some other things and if he waits, he's going to be there a lot longer. all say they wish him well in whatever he chooses to do next. senator tom udall tells me there's no predicting what will happen in 20-12 for democrats but one this is certain - he says bingaman will be miss. back to you. republicans are already setting their eyes on the democratic senator's long- held seat. the national republican senatorial committee issued a statement today saying bingaman's decision presents a strong opportunity for the g-o-p. that's because bingaman is the 3rd democrat to announce he's not going to run again. also not running, independent joe lieberman--who often sides with the democrats if republicans win those seats---and hold on to the ones they have--- they will have a one seat majority in the senate. the list of other potential candidates includes u-s representatives martin heinrich and ben ray lujan..... former lieutenant governor diane denish. as for republicans -- former u-s representative heather wilson and representative steve pearce and former governor gary johnson's names have come up. whether it's a republican or a democrat - whoever replaces senator bingaman will have big, popular shoes to fill. new mexicans first sent bingaman to the senate in 1983 and he's handily won re-election four times since then. jeff bingaman's small town roots run deep ... but early on it was clear he was destined for big things. the silver city native went to harvard ... then stanford law school. that's where he met his wife. after graduating in 1968 the two returned to bingaman's home state where he began his law practice. in 1978, he was elected as new mexico's attorney general. then, just four years later, he was elected to the united states senate -- edging out one- term republican and former astronaut harrison schmitt. described by colleague tom udall as thoughtful and serious ... with a famous work ethic .... bingaman was never one of the senate's higher profile members. but he was extremely popular at home ... defeating his challengers with more than 60 percent of the vote in 3 out of 5 campaigns. after nearly three decadein the senate ... no doubt bingaman has a lot to reflect on ... but he didn't really want to talk about that today. he's just focusing on the work he still has to do. in fact -- next week the senator will be in albuquerque to investigate new mexico's natural gas crisis. bingaman chairs the senate energy and natural resources committee. on monday he'll hear from local mayors-- and executives of companies involved in piping natural gas from texas. that includes the ceo of continental energy systems-- which owns new mexico gas company. bingaman's depature from the senate will have far reaching effects... and kob eyewitness news 4 is committed to following every development. so keep it right here in the weeks ahead.
