The life on Pandora in "Avatar," to the wreck in "Titanic"--- AND now Cameron's recent record-setting solo dive to the Mariana Trench is providing further inspiration for the "Avatar" sequels, which will head to the oceans of Pandora.The filmmaker plunged seven miles to the deepest point in the world in a torpedo-shaped, one-man submersible called the Deepsea Challenger (and this took 7 years to prep for FYI)— and he said this sparked ideas for the "Avatar" followups.In an interview with Hero Complex, Cameron explained "The best inspiration I got for 'Avatar' 2 and 3 was dealing with the master navigator culture in Micronesia," He went on to say, "Everybody tries to connect these dots... Everybody looks at the world through the lens of Hollywood. When I'm doing deep ocean exploration, I'm doing deep ocean exploration and when I'm making 'Avatar,' I'm making 'Avatar.' I object to this notion that my purpose in diving is to do research for a movie. My purpose in making a movie is to make enough money so I can dive."Cameron said he planned to head from Tokyo back to his Deepsea Challenger crew in Guam, where he'll make at least two more dives. When he surfaces, Cameron will enter pre-production for "Avatar 2."Nice! Well just went you thought the man couldn't get any cooler, he dives to the center of the earth. Empire spoke to Cameron's producer Jon Landau ahead of this week's release of "Titanic 3D," and he admitted that the 2014 possibility for the first sequel was a little optimistic. He said, "We're not really naming dates.... but I think 2014 will be a tough date for us to make. For us, it's about getting it right. "Titanic" was meant to be a summer movie. "Avatar" was meant to be 2008, then it was 2009. Movies make release dates, release dates don't make movies."So its looking like the already long wait...has become longer. It looks like "Avatar" sequels are forging full force ahead, and everything else is being put on the backburner. When Cameron was asked what projects he is looking at (other than an "Avatar" sequel), he said: "I'm in the 'Avatar' business. Period. That's it. I'm making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4,' and I'm not going to produce other people's movies for them." That is certainly bad news for Battle Angel fans, which Cameron said a couple weeks ago he would still be interested in making, but not until the "Avatar" sequels were finished. He also said he wouldn't let another director pry it out of his "cold dead fingers," so does this mean Cameron might take Battle Angel to his grave after all?Cameron also indicated in the interview he is currently working on the "Avatar" sequel, right now on the tool set, the production pipeline, setting up new stages in Los Angeles, setting up visual effects production in New Zealand, and of course, writing the script. In case you forgot, "Avatar" is the top grossing movie of all time, earning $2.8 billion at the worldwide box office, so can you really blame Cameron for his film focus?
