True Norwegian Black Metal - Part 1 official
To see the other parts go to www.VBS.tv We went to Norway to interview Gaahl, lead singer of the band Gorgoroth. Gaahl really believes in this whole ideology behind what he's doing—he's not just some rockstar fronting a band. The thing with Black Metal is, in Norway, everybody is exactly the same. There's nothing to rebel against, because everybody's really well off. It's one of the richest countries in Europe. There is no lower class, it's like middle-class white kids everywhere—no one has anything to complain about. And he's this sort of eccentric figure amidst this sea of contentment and sameness. The way I see it is, in America you have guys like 50 Cent who are supposed to be the "villain." Kids like him cause they're parents hate him, and that's basically what Gaahl is. He's their musical villain so to speak. But there's a lot of different sides to the scene.

VBS Meets - Sizzla official
To see more go to www.VBS.tv We got to meet Sizzla on our long trek to Jamaica. See what he has to say and check out the rest of our interview here.
VBS Meets - Sean Paul official
To see more go to www.VBS.tv Since you can basically just pop on MTV or your local "urban" radio station at any given moment of the day to hear Sean Paul (or, if you live in the right neighborhood, open your window), we aren't going to bog you down with a bunch of youtube videos as if we'd "found" him. By this point, we're pretty sure most of our moms have heard fucking "Temperature" or whatever (and are starting to get over it).
Practice Space 1349 official
To see more go to www.VBStv We kick-started our Norway trip by getting drunk with the guys from Enslaved and then spent ten days with some of the most renowned artists in the Norwegian Black Metal scene, ending it all at 1349's practice space. During the trip I learned a lot about Black Metal guys. For most of them, their big thing is individualism, which can make it kind of hard to talk to them. They don't really care what you think of them, or their band or anything, so it basically makes for completely one-sided conversations (interrogations, really, in my opinion). This may sound boring, and it can be, but Black Metallers do have shitloads to say about religion and current events, so if you go in with this in mind and stick to just getting their reactions and reflections you'll be fine (but don't expect a question back). 1349 was a perfect example of this and, damn, are they fucking scary! I'd be worried about death threats, but they're Black Metal--they don't care what I think. Oh yeah, their name comes from the year the Black Plague came to Norway.
Practice Space Enslaved official
Go to www.vbs.tv for more on this series As they'll quickly have you know, Enslaved do not consider themselves Black Metal, but rather Extreme Metal, a subset of Viking Metal taking its cues from Bathory's clarion call of sweeping, thunderous Valyrie-rock as well as Thrash's blistering speed. We know all these subgenres and subsubgenres make Scandinavian metal seem like that "Judean People's Front" scene from Life of Brian in corpse paint, but we swear there are actually distinctions in the styles that matter very deeply to a select breed of nerd. After it had seen 72 days of nonstop rain we arrived in Bergen. It seemed a perfect backdrop for our meeting with a bunch of Black Metal maniacs, so we went straight from the plane to Enslaved’s practice space in the basement of the venue for Hole in the Sky (the most hard core Black Metal festival in Norway, and probably the world). They’re a great bunch of guys, but they’re not Black Metal. They’re Extreme Metal, because they weren’t into Satanism like most of the bands we’d be meeting in the following ten days. Also it turned out we weren't supposed to have beers in their practice space. Uh, this is supposed to be the extremest music on earth and you're going to kowtow to some rental-space owner's beer rules? Right. So anyway, we snuck some in (Extreme!).
VBS Meets Rick Ross official
SEE MORE - http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=144820 ***** VBS.tv has a three part interview up now with rapper Rick Ross. In the interview Ross endorses Obama for president as well as endorsing Obam's right to cheat on his wife on the road, cause a man is a man. He also says people should lighten about HGH, that home runs save baseball, that Roger Clemens is a hero, and Andy Pettitte is no friend for ratting Clemens out. Oh and Rick Ross likes fish sandwiches.
Secret Show - Against Me! official
To see more go to www.vbs.tv We had a secret show for Against Me! last night at gay-skinhead circuit party mainstay Siberia in Midtown. We even videotaped the whole thing just so you would have a reason to not slit your wrists after finding out you missed the show. www.vbs.tv
Practice Space - The Virgins official
To see more of this show go to www.vbs.tv The Virgins are maybe our favorite new band in New York right now, and we're pretty sure they're going to be famous and unfairly rich within a year. VBS correspondent Woodrow Morton recently went to their midtown practice space to shoot the shit a little bit and hear them play a song. www.vbs.tv
VBS Meets - Nick Cave - Part 1 official
To see more of this interview go to www.vbs.tv When the VBS film crew first entered Nick Cave and Jim Sclavunos’s hotel room (which had a really great and depressing view of Ground Zero, by the way), we were rushed for time and got the serious cold shoulder from Nick and Jim, who seemed weary of the press junket they were on and ready to pull out knives at the slightest provocation. Nick cracked wise about how he couldn’t wait to get out of New York and return to London later that afternoon and Jim just glowered like an intimidating mad scientist. I’m a huge fan of The Bad Seeds and thanks to Nick’s reputation of being a fearsome interview, I was ready to get totally shut down by some Old Testament-style fervor. He wears his contempt for music journalists on his sleeve and I can’t really blame him. We suck.
Practice Space - Grizzly Bear official
To see more go to www.VBS.tv Despite having been together for all of two years, Grizzly Bear has a ridiculous number of really good videos, as if they were some sort of teen heartthrobs siphoning millions of their label. Instead of wasting our time flapping our gums at you about them, here is a smattering of live clips.
Soft Focus - Genesis P. Orridge - Part 1 official
To see the other parts of this interview go to www.vbs.tv Genesis P. Orridge’s influence on culture is hard to underestimate and therefore, we at Soft Focus set him in our sights at zero hour. He obviously merged perfectly with the other metamorphasizing maniacs and bewitching ingénues we planned to feature. Having lived through (and even initiated) so many remarkable music and cultural phenomena, Genesis is the perhaps the easiest person to have fill a cassette tape or microphone with fascination. When a word is pitched, one thousand responses come from a unique perspective with a special and also unique place in history.
Practice Space - Young Love official
To see more go to www.VBS.tv. We had a good time with Dan Keyes from Young Love for this episode of Practice Space—we really like the guy. And not just because he’s a fucking giant who towers over us like a chainsmoking sequoia—he’s also from Texas and people from Texas are, as a rule, generally amazing (unless they are horrible). So that’s why we like this guy: Cause he’s tall and from Texas, and also he bought us two rounds of margaritas.
Practice Space - The Honorary Title official
To see more go to www.VBS.tv. See bands in their home away from home, aside from the tour van. Whatevs. We're talking about their practice space. This episode: The Honorary Title.

Soft Focus - Henry Rollins - Part 1 official
To see more of this show go to www.vbs.tv I had just started discussing with VBS the idea of doing an aimless, rambling chat show that focused on musicians and Henry Rollins had—magically it seemed—materialized. For those of you who don’t know, Henry sang with SOA, Black Flag, and Rollins Band, has published countless books, re-released a trove of hard to find, amazing records, acted in movies by directors ranging from Richard Kern to Michael Mann, currently hosts his own talk show, and is also a radio disc jockey. We had a great, aimless rambling chat and I mentioned the idea of producing an aimless rambling chat show and, magically, he said he’d be happy to appear on it. So that’s how Henry Rollins ended up on Soft Focus. Those Masons are really something else, huh? www.vbs.vt
