Life After Diamonds
'Life After Diamonds' highlights the destruction and challenges faced in mining communities in the post-war diamondiferous regions in Sierra Leone. Cooperatives in the Kono district are engaging in reclamation of wasted mining sites into agricultural productive land to create food security, encourage wider industry adoption of Corporate Social Responsibility and promote improved legislation.Shot in March and April 2009, 'Life After Diamonds' was created by Canadian volunteers Larissa Stendie and Sheryle Carlson, partnering with production team at the Environmental Foundation for Africa.During the Civil War in Sierra Leone, international consumers were understandably horrified to learn that jewelry they had purchased as a symbol of their love may have come at such terrible human and environmental costs, and began to push for tighter restrictions in the trade and paper trail for diamonds. While the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme has helped facilitate this in many countries, in Sierra Leone very little has changed, for while the regulations and legislation are in place, very little enforcement or compliance actually occur. Some speculate that the nebulous nature of licensing, fees, and ownership is deliberate, as everyone from journalists and shopkeepers, to chiefs and mines officials seem to have artisanal diggers whom they marginally support on a subsistence basis.

SAHRAWI ENCOUNTER, the courage to live for freedom. Against the harsh and stunning landscape of the Western Sahara, director Walter Bencini tells the story of his voyage to meet the people of the Sahrawi. For decades this people has lived uprooted from its homeland and confined to tent cities bearing the names of the Moroccan cities left behind. As part of a group undertaking a voyage of solidarity in an effort to alleviate some of the thousands of problems afflicting this population, our narrator witnesses some of the constant concerns facing them, such as water scarcity and the difficulties of accessing basic necessities such as food, health care and education. The Sahrawi people claim the inalienable right to their own identity, refusing to disperse and reminding the world, with peaceful obstinacy, of their existence and their right to self-determination. Thanks to international solidarity they manage to get by while awaiting enforcement of the UN resolutions recognizing their rights. Nevertheless, in spite of their problems, the Sahrawi people preserve a truly amazing sense of dignity and hospitality that actively engages our visitors in an atmosphere of giving and receiving. Here smiles and gazes are freely reciprocated, generating the respect and acceptance that is the basis of authentic acknowledgement. Couples are enjoying the latest craze to grip Paris: Cinderella carriage rides underneath the Eiffel Tower. Newlyweds Jacqueline and Ken relished a romantic finish to their dream day rounding off their wedding with a carriage ride around Paris. Jacqueline, the Bride, said: "It is very romantic. Actually, Paris is already a very romantic city and I'm very happy to get married in a place like this." The four-hour tour of the French capital will set people back over £1000. But Groom Ken thinks it's worth it: "Well, it is very special. It is almost like a fairy tale. We always dreamed to have something like this." Coachman Philippe Delon added: "It's romantic, it's a dream, it's about Cinderella."

Undersea oil from BP well confirmed
US experts investigating reports of undersea oil plums coming from BP's well in the Gulf of Mexico have confirmed low levels of oil below the surface. "NOAA is confirming the presence of very low concentrations of subsurface oil," Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said. It was the first government confirmation of undersea oil near BP's blown-out well a mile beneath the ocean. BP officials had previously denied the existence of oil under the surface. But Lubchenco said: "The bottom line is yes, there is oil in the water column." At the moment, NOAA is trying to 'fingerprint' the oil to confirm that it came from BP's well.

Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull - May 1st and 2nd, 2010
So I saw all of these mediocre pictures of that volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the name of, so I figured I should go and do better. But the flights to get over took forever as expected (somewhat). 4 days after leaving I finally made it, but the weather was terrible for another 4. Just before leaving it got pretty good for about a day and a half and this is what I managed to get.Wish I had more time. I missed all the cool Lightning and the Lava of the first eruption.
