"summertime" - album : elementary doc watson musique from george gershwin, du bose heywardDoc Watson est né à Deep Gap, en Caroline du Nord, le 3 mars 1923. Comme il l'explique sur le triple CD biographique Legacy, il obtint le surnom de Doc pendant un enregistrement en public à la radio lorsque le présentateur remarqua que son prénom Arthel était bizarre et qu’il aurait préféré un surnom plus facile. Un des fans s’écria « Appelez-le Doc ! », certainement en référence au bras droit de Sherlock Holmes, le Docteur Watson. Le surnom est resté.Une infection de l’œil lui fit perdre la vue alors qu’il n’avait pas un an. Ses parents le forcèrent à travailler dur pour devenir indépendant. Il fut accepté dans l’école pour les déficients visuels de Caroline du Nord, la Governor Morehead School, située à Raleigh NC.La première chanson qu’il appris fut When Roses Bloom in Dixieland. Son père fut si fier qu’il emmena le jeune Arthel acheter sa première guitare, une Stella à $12. Doc s’est avéré être naturellement doué, et en quelques mois il se retrouva à un coin de rue à jouer les chansons de Delmore, Louvin and Monroe Brothers' duos aux côtés de son frère Linny. Arrivé à sa majorité, il était un guitariste prolifique, aussi bien en guitare acoustique qu’électrique.
