The Funk Brothers & Chaka Khan - Live Motown - What's Going
Tout le monde connait l’histoire de Motown, label de Detroit fondé en 1958 par Berry Gordy. Tout le monde connait la flopée d’artistes maison, de Diana Ross à Marvin Gaye, qui squatta les charts plus d’une décennie avec des tubes impérissables tels "In the Name of Love", "Dancing In The Streets", "Where Did Our Love Go", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "Baby Love"… En fait, tout le monde ne connaît qu’une partie de l’histoire. Les 13 musiciens, responsables de tous ces classiques enregistrés entre 1959 et 1971, continuent pitoyablement à végéter dans l’anonymat. Leur nom : les Funk Brothers. Grâce au documentaire Standing in the Shadows of Motown, réalisé d’après le bouquin d’Allan Slutsky alias Dr. Licks et sa fantastique BO – captation du concert historique donné en 2000 avec 7 rescapés plus que sexagénaires et quelques stars de la pop, du R&B, ou du funk comme Ben Harper, Chaka Khan, Bootsy Collins ou Joan Osbourne (qui offre deux versions exceptionnelles de "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave" et "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted") –, justice leur est enfin rendue. Bien longtemps après sa fermeture, la machine à hits fait de nouveau groover 15 chansons créées dans la cave en terre battue du Studio A surnommé "The Snakepit" (la fosse aux serpents). Average White Band Cut the cake
Average White Band est un des rares groupes blanc à avoir réussi à s'imposer dans le milieu de la musique Funk. Composé du chanteur/bassiste Alan Gorrie, des guitaristes Hamish Stuart et Onnie McIntyre, du saxophoniste Malcolm Duncan, du clavier Roger Ball et du batteur Robbie McIntosh. Les musiciens sont issus de divers groupes écossais de soul/jazz. Ils ont fait leur début en 1973 en première partie d'Eric Clapton à Londres. Ils obtiennent alors un contrat avec la branche anglaise de MCA. Le premier album "Show Your Hands" ne marche pas très bien mais ils décident quand même de traverser l'Atlantique pour s'attaquer au public américain et enregistrer un second album. Un an plus tard ils atteignent le sommet des charts américains avec le morceau instrumental "Pick up the pieces" issu de l'album "AWB" paru en 1974. Le succés de ce titre a été entâché de la mort par overdose de Robbie McIntosh lors d'une soirée à Hollywood le 23 septembre 1974. Steve Ferrone, britannique passioné de Soul devient alors leur nouveau batteur. Le groupe retrouve alors les studios pour enregistrer "Cut the Cake" en 1975, dont les ventes sont tout aussi impressionnantes.
