Paul Simon et Arthur Garfunkel se rencontrèrent en 1956 au Forest Hills High School à New York, où ils commencèrent à jouer tous les deux dans un groupe appelé « Tom & Jerry ». Ils commencèrent à écrire leurs propres chansons dès 1957, et ils enregistrèrent une de leurs premières chansons de rock and roll, Hey, Schoolgirl, dont les ventes estimées atteignirent 100 000 à 150 000 exemplaires. Cependant, leurs tentatives suivantes en 1958 n'eurent pas le succès de ce coup d'essai, et le duo se sépara. Ils se retrouvèrent en 1963 grâce à leur passion commune pour la musique folk, et enregistrèrent leur premier véritable album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. en 1964, qui eut un succès très mitigé. Peu de temps après l'enregistrement, le duo se sépara une nouvelle fois, et Simon partit en Angleterre, où il enregistra un album solo, The Paul Simon Song Book, en 1965. Pendant ce temps, la chanson The Sound of Silence, tirée de l'album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., connut un succès à retardement, à la grande surprise de Paul Simon. Il retourna alors aux États-Unis, où le groupe se reforma une seconde fois pour enregistrer de nouveaux titres dans le même style. En 1966, l'album Sounds of Silence apparut aux hit-parades, grâce notamment à la réédition du titre à succès du même nom. En 1967, Simon & Garfunkel composèrent la bande originale du film Le Lauréat (The Graduate) de Mike Nichols. L'album fut premier au hit-parade en 1968, notamment grâce au tube Mrs Robinson, qui fut récompensé aux Grammy Awards de 1969. Mais les relations devinrent tendues dans le duo. L'album Bridge Over Troubled Water, sorti en 1970, fut leur dernier, et ce, malgré un succès extraordinaire (n° 1 des ventes pendant six semaines, et plusieurs Grammy awards en 1971). Paul Simon et Art Garfunkel se séparèrent cette année là, alors même que les ventes de leurs Greatest hits s'envolaient. Simon s'engagea dans une carrière solo, alors que Garfunkel se dirigea vers le cinéma. Depuis lors, Simon et Garfunkel reconstituèrent leur duo à plusieurs reprises pour des concerts exceptionnels ; comme en 1981 pour un concert gratuit à Central Park qui réunit 500 000 personnes, ou en 2003 pour l'ouverture des Grammy Awards, où ils furent récompensés pour leur contribution de plus de quatre décennies à la musique populaire. Puis en 2004, un double CD -DVD intitulé "Old Friends Live On Stage" immortalise la tournée "Old Friends Tour" en 2003 à travers les USA et L'Europe reprenant tous les standards du duo qui ont fait le succès depuis 40 ans de Paul et Art.
