Six Years of Waiting Over - Mainland Chinese Audience Member Sees Shen Yun in New York City

We caught up with one Chinese who said he's waited for years to see the show in person... having recently arrived from the Mainland. [Wang Beiji, University Executive Director]:"Song to the dance, to the music, to the clothing, to the background, is perfect."Mr. Wang arrived in the US six months ago. After waiting more than six years, he finally saw Shen Yun Performing Arts in New York last night.[Wang Beiji, University Executive Director]:"There is pure feeling, the feeling is very simple, it is just a completely different performance."He says one of the lead male dancers left the biggest impression on him.[Wang Beiji, University Executive Director]:"Seeing Mr. Chen Yungchia dance, I was stunned! I had seen a short online introduction, but today I was lucky, really very lucky, to be so close—in the first row, to see him dance. It was very, very stunning—it's very, very perfect. Personally I think that Chen Yungchia's performance, the energy is very, very powerful."In mainland China, Shen Yun's performance is banned by the Communist authorities. Shen Yun fans, however, circulate DVDs of the performance at their own risk, allowing Chinese people to view their own traditional culture.NTD News, New York.reporter

And I admire the training. It's not like an overnight thing—you can tell... It's the mental. That's the discipline. It's amazing."Shen Yun is New York-based. Its mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.[Beena Raj, Lawyer]:"It is amazing to come here and see in a short time, an hour-and-a-half to two, a 5,000 year culture. It's not just the artistic part of it but it's also the cultural part of it. It's the traditional heritage part of it. Our correspondent in Houston yesterday spoke with a former ballerina who really enjoyed her encounter with Chinese classical dance.Sasha Davis trained at the Royal Ballet School in London. She now lives in Houston, Texas. On Wednesday night she saw Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time. [Sasha Davis, Former Ballerina]:"They're amazing. Technically their amazing, in their precision but also in their artistry."Ms. Davis says Shen Yun's female dancers are very feminine, but very strong. [Sasha Davis, Former Ballerina]:"And the male dancers are very strong indeed. But everyone is so light on their feet."One dance student was also impressed by Chinese classical dance.[Madison Calicchia, Dance Student]:"It was incredible. I couldn't even understand how—they were so technically perfect, with everything that they did. And it was just unbelievable."Shen Yun takes the audience on a journey from the founding of Chinese civilization 5000 years ago to the present day. Shen Yun brings to life stories from ancient China's past... and present. Audience members gave the performance a standing ovation. Here's what some of them had to say.On Friday, October 28th, Shen Yun Performing Arts performed at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The show featured the company's best performances from the past five years.[Allen Davis, Retired Military Officer]:"It's the best show I think I've ever seen in my life. I'm 80-years-old, and I've never seen a show this good."Many audience members were from the arts community. William Grosso was in New York for NTD's International Chinese Vocal Competition. He also came to see Shen Yun.[William Grosso, President, Sicily Opera Academy]:"All the music, singers, dancers, everything was perfect."Musician Frank Angruloi says the dedication of the performers is evident.[Frank Angruloi, Musician]:"Well it's a very dedicated group of talented artists, and they travel the world, and they must dedicate their life to doing this as well as they do."Natalia Stepanova is a dance teacher with 20 years of experience across the world. She took her students and their parents to the show.[Natalia Stepanova, Dance Teacher]:"I was watching the reaction of my students. They couldn't bring their eyes from the stage, because it's such a unique mix of computer graphics, which attract children and help them better understand the idea of choreography and give them the beautiful historical lessons, of course five thousand years, and you can sense it. It was not just a singular performance but there were so many aspects, from the women's point of view, from the male point of view, from a history point of view, from lands that I was going to, but most of all from a spiritual level. That it was connecting the spirit and the calling of the spirit into ourselves, and realizing that's so important. It was so beautiful to see that." She enjoyed Shen Yun's bel canto style vocalists. [Donna Karan, Fashion Designer]:"I was so happy that I was able to read, the voice. The voices were extraordinary. Really terrific performances. I think there were 19 women and 18 to 19 men. Among the audience at the show were several dancers, a former soprano, and a man whose family was persecuted under Hitler's regime. There were tricks, there was everything. The scenery is beautiful and the costumes are wonderful and of course the dancers are marvelous. I enjoyed every bit of it."Aaron Goldhammer commented on the performance "Our Story" about the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China today.[Aaron Goldhammer, Audience Member]:"My family was in Auschwitz in the 2nd World War. I found the scene where the teacher was taken by the security forces very, very telling from the story that I was taught. In 1944 my grandparents and family were also taken away for believing in certain beliefs.
