Chile gains entry into OECD 12 Jan 10
Chile has become the first South American country to be admitted into the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).Michelle Bachelet, Chile's president, says entry into the group is a major stride towards joining the ranks of developed nations.Chile has, in the last two decades, gone from being one of the poorest countries in Latin America to one of the richest. Based in France, the OECD comprises 30 countries that promote principles of representative democracy and free-market economy. It traditionally includes rich and industrialised nations such as the US, Japan and South Korea. In recent years, it has also made efforts to give entry to developing economies such as Mexico and Poland.Membership - given to countries that meet certain political and economic requirements - allows member states to discuss and co-ordinate global social, environmental, and economic policies.Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman, reporting from Santiago, explains that Chile's free market economy was one factor that helped it gain entry into the OECD."An economic powerhouse like Brazil, for example, doesn't have such an open economy and has many protectionist measures," she said.

Mexico's youth awakening
Mexicans will head to the polls on July 1 for national and local elections, voting in Senators, Governers and a new President.More than 3.5 million people will be casting their ballots for the first time. The so-called youth vote for those aged 18 to 29 makes up more than 20% of the electorate. If voter turnout is high it could have an impact on the election, however, nearly half of voters in that age group are still undecided, according to a recent academic study. Al Jazeera's Rachel Levin reports on how the youth vote could play a big role in deciding the next President of Mexico.

Los Angeles, May 30 (EFE).- Chilean photographer Jose Fuentes trained his puppy Carrie to dance to the beat of Latin rhythms as entertainment for family get-togethers - and today she's a show-stopping sensation around the United States. "I bought the little dog when she was 2 months old and I started doing tricks with her like a kind of game. And when she was 2 years old she just upped and started dancing without any planning on my part," Fuentes told Efe. "We established a really good connection from the time she was a puppy, so I started teaching her tricks, tricks and more tricks, and she learned so quickly my brain couldn't keep up with her to teach her more things to do," Fuentes said. Fuentes, who in the Chilean capital is an advertising photographer, said he only danced with Carrie for fun and to amuse his family. "I don't know why she likes to dance, she does it as a way of playing with me and it's like her vibe," Fuentes said of the GolPowered by NewsLook.com Producer : EFENews
