Who is Salt?

Does a blonde Angelina Jolie super-spy work for you? How about a brunette Angelina who's on the run from the CIA? Good then, because both of those descriptions fit the character of Evelyn Salt, the titular player in the upcoming Columbia Pictures action-thriller Salt. Here's what we know about the film so far...

Once upon a time -- back in the summer of 2007 -- Evelyn was actually called Edwin, and Angelina was more of a Tom. A Tom Cruise, in fact, for at that point the project was called Edwin A. Salt and was seen as a possible starring vehicle for Cruise. Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) was in negotiations to direct the Kurt Wimmer (Ultraviolet, Equilibrium) script for producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, G.I. Joe) and Sunil Perkash. Peter Berg (Hancock) was also rumored as a possible helmer on the project around this time.

The film was described as being about "a CIA officer who is fingered by a defector as a Russian sleeper spy. Salt must elude capture by his superiors and sets out to reunite with his family and prove his innocence." That early logline pretty much tracks with the movie that is coming this summer, though the key players would change substantially.

A year later word came that Australian director Philip Noyce had landed the Salt helming job. Noyce had more or less mastered the espionage thriller genre back in the '90s with the Jack Ryan pictures Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, though in more recent years he'd made his mark in smaller, quieter films like Rabbit-Proof Fence and The Quiet American.
