Les Instants Chavirés
World Fusion VIDEO is a way of composing, improvising, and performing that brings AVmusics together rather than segregating them. It is a way of making AVmusic which holds that allAV musics are created equal, coexisting in a beautiful brotherhoood/sisterhood of AVmusics that complement and fructify each other. It is a global concept which allows the world’s AVmusics—written, improvised, handed-down, traditional, experimental—to come together, to learn, from one another, to reflect human diversity and pluralism. It is the music of rapprochement, o f entente_not of competition and confrontation. And it is the logical outcome of the American melting pot: E pluribus unum. Blue Waters - Benny Waters 1982
Blue Waters - Benny Waters - Hot Antic 1982 Amazing amount of energy is displayed by 80 year old Benny Waters. He is playing a blues. What an unique variation of well choosen notes. His music goes so well with the very simple and controlled notes of the Hot Antic Rhythm group. They are just the right band to back him up. Michel Bastide on trumpet, Jean Francois Bonnel tenor sax, Gilles Berrut piano, Jean-Pierre Dubois banjo and Christian Lafevre tuba. Recorded during a 1982 tour of Benny with Hot Antic through France.
When You're Smiling - Benny Waters 1982
When you’re Smiling - Benny Waters - Hot Antic JB 1982. In the summer of 1982 The Hot Antic Jazz Band played a concert in the town of Uzes just west of Avignon in the southern part of France. It was just fantastic that they had been able to contract famous alto player Benny Waters to join them, even more fantastic that there was a cameraman with camcorder in the audience. Michel Bastide, trumpetplayer and leader send me a set of films from this event and we like to share this with you. Benny Waters had a long career, he was born in 1902 in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended the New England conservatory of music where he gave lessons to Harry Carney. He worked with King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson and many others. In 1952 he moved to Paris , from where he performed until his 95th birthday. John McDonough wrote in Down Beat, "Waters plays it straight down the middle with a sympathetic but contemporary rhythm section, and his strong, gritty-on-demand sound in all registers neither asks nor gives any quarter. His intonation and control are clear and hard as a rock as he twists notes with a raw lyricism. It's that sound more than his ideas that regularly carries his solos to a boil on track after track." In this tune Hot Antic Jazz Band consists of Michel Bastide on trombone, Jean Francois Bonnel trumpet, Gilles Berrut piano, Jean-Pierre Dubois banjo and Christian Lafevre tuba.
Lazy River - Irakli 1987
Lazy River- Irakli 1987 Irakli de Davrichewey and his Orchestra play “Lazy River” at the Jazz Festival d'Antibes France in 1987. Trumpetplayer Irakli and his band master the style of Louis Armstrong's early All Stars. This band from France has an enormous amount of energy and combined with the technical knowledge and maximum intensity creates a very exciting approach to the former Louis All Stars music. The other musicians in Irakli’s superb band are clarinetist Stephane Gerrault, Claude Cousset trombone, pianist Pierre Calligaris, bassist Frederic Legrande and drummer Michel Denis
I want a Little Girl - Bill Coleman 1972
I want a Little Girl - Bill Coleman 1972 One of my favourite swing trumpet players was Bill Coleman (1904-1981). I compare him in line with Buck Clayton, Frankie Newton and Red Allen. Unfortunately there are not many films of him. He lived for a large part of his life in France and missed some of the international glory the others had. In a French TV program called Jazz Harmonie Bill plays trumpet. Marc Hemmeler piano, Jimmy Gourley guitar, Pierre Sim bass and Michel Silva drums.
Someday You'll be Sorry - Irakli
Someday Sweetheart - Irakli 1987 Irakli de Davrichewey and his Orchestra play Someday You’ll be Sorry. Recorded at the Jazz Festival d'Antibes France in 1987 trumpetplayer Irakli and his band manages to superbly master the style of Louis Armstrong's early All Stars. This band from France has an enormous amount of energy and combined with the technical knowledge and maximum intensity creates a very exciting approach to the former Louis All Stars music. Irakl does some incredible Louis oriented trumpet work both technically as well as tonally and emotionally. Next to him we hear clarinettist Stephane Gerrault who is able to create that wonderful feeling that Barney Bigard was able to give to Louis' band in the late 40's and 50's. Claude Cousset is playing a strong trombone. Pianist Pierre Calligaris falls nicely in a pianosolo in the Billy Kyle style. Bassist Frederic Legrande and drummer Michel Denis complete the hard swinging Rhythm group. Just a formidable and very together band! I had posted two clips of this concert in 2007 on youtube and several of my friends cannot understand why there has been so little viewer attention to these clips with this incredible band. Well, a few more, we’ll see.
That Thing called Love-Edith Wilson
That Thing called Love - Edith Wilson 1974 Edith Wilson was one of the stars of early African-American musical theatre. She was probably born around 1906. Sho rose to prominence already in 1921 when she replaced Mamie Smith in the musical revue “Put and Take”. She appeared in the show “From Dover Street to Dixie” which played in London England. Wilson travelled the world from 1926 with Sam Wooding visiting England, Germany, Germany, Sweden, Spain, and even Turkey, Romania, Russia and Argentina. In the thirties she appeared with Cab Calloway, Jimmy Lunceford, Noble Sissle and others. She was active in theatre work throughout WWII. She retired in 1963, but came back to record with Eubie Blake in 1972. She sings a tune she recorded first with cornetist Johnny Dunn in 1922. In this clip she is backed up by The High Society Jazz Band which was formed in 1947, and is one of France’s oldest still active jazz bands under the leadership of clarinetist Pierre Atlan. I also recognize trumpeter Pierre Merlin and probably trombonist Daniel Barda who now in 2009 is leading te band. The band has managed to achieve one of the most authentic “old” sounds since the revival began in 1939. This is a very interesting combination

She is accompanied by two of the best French Jazz players who had a good idea to stylistically compliment her. On piano is Claude Bolling and on trumpet Irakli de Davricheway.

I made a photo and added it at the end of this clip. Special cat goes for special music!
Love-Jabbo Smith/Hot Antic JB 1982
Love – Jabbo Smith - Hot Antic Jazz Band 1982 In another clip of Jabbo Smith playing in concert with France’s Hot Antic Jazz Band we hear “Love”, another composition by Jabbo. Jabbo is now 74, but in the late twenties he became world famous with a band which was called The Rhythm Aces. He recorded on Brunswick Records in straight competition with Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five on the Okeh label. He quit playing professionally in the late thirties and started again in the later sixties. In 1982 Michel Bastide of the Hot AnticJazz Band from the south of France was able to get Jabbo and organized a tour with concerts in France and Italy. Hot Antic Jazz Band consists of Michel Bastide on trumpet and trombone, Jean Francois Bonnel clarinet, Gilles Berrut piano, Jean-Pierre Dubois banjo and Christian Lafevre tuba.
