Arjen Robben's World Cup hopes will depend on the outcome of a scan after he was injured during the Netherlands's 6-1 friendly win over Hungary. Robben, who hobbled off two minutes from time, has not travelled to South Africa with the rest of the Dutch squad. "My first thought was this can't be true, the end of the final warm-up match, everyone is fit and then this," said coach Bert van Marwijk. "We now have to wait. I can replace Robben until 24 hours before our opening match but as long as there is hope he recovers in time he will stay in the squad." The Dutch open their campaign on June 14 against Denmark.

Police have said they had no chance to stop Derrick Bird's gun rampage. Chief Constable Craig Mackey said ten victims were killed within an hour as Bird drove across west Cumbria. Mr Mackey said: "At no stage did any police officer have the chance to end this any sooner." Contrary to what police had previously thought, the killings started in the early hours of Wednesday. Bird's twin brother, David, was the first victim, but was not discovered until later in the morning. The family solicitor, Kevin Commons, was the second to be killed at his home in Frizington. The second phase of Bird's attacks took place between 10.30am and 11.35am while he was on the run, Mr Mackey said. Those shootings began in Whitehaven and he went on to kill ten other people during that hour. Mr Mackey said that, as soon as the call came in, every armed officer - 42 in total - in the county was deployed to the area. He said: "Our officers were on the scene within minutes but, due to Bird's knowledge of local roads, he had fled in his vehicle and was travelling south, firing shots along his way. "Police and RAF rescue helicopters were drafted into the area and a massive land and air search began. Crucially, in this period Bird was firing shots out of his vehicle, moving from place to place, and was not in any one area for a significant length of time."

New technology that could minimise future disruption to planes from volcanic ash has been unveiled by budget airline easyJet. The carrier will be the first airline to trial a new "weather radar or ash" system called AVOID (Airborne Volcanic Object Identifier and Detector). The system involves placing infared technology onto an aircraft to supply images to both the pilots and an airline's flight control centre. Millions of passengers had their travel plans wrecked when airlines had to scrap thousands of flights in recent weeks due to the Icelandic volcanic ash problem. EasyJet chief executive Andy Harrison said: "This pioneering technology is the silver bullet that will make large-scale ash disruption history." Andrew Haines, chief executive of the Civil Aviation Authority, said: "It is essential that the aviation community works together to develop solutions to minimise disruption should ash return."
