GOOD Magazine: Nuclear Weapons Transparency

This was a cool little demonstration. During the Cold War we had amassed a nuclear arsenal capable of destroying the world more than one hundred times over. The entire surface of the Earth would be carbonized several times over, including the bottom of all the Oceans that would be completely evaporated from the generated heat. The typical Peacekeeper system consisted of one intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the Moscow in 45 minutes with ten nuclear warheads of 330 megatons each. Our delivery systems were much better than the Russian's so our bombs didn't need to be as huge as theirs, but we still made them big for psychological deterrence. When one bomb can destroy an entire country, it makes you think twice before entering into conflict with them. Now we are developing tactical (small) nuclear missiles to be used against deeply buried, super reinforced bunkers like they have in North Korea or in Iran.
