Caravaggio (1986)
Directed by Derek JarmanUK 89 minutesCaravaggio (1986) is probably the closest Derek Jarman came to a mainstream film. And yet the film is a uniquely complex and lucid treatment of Jarman's major concerns: violence, history, homosexuality, and the relation between film and painting. However, according to Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit, Caravaggio is unlike Jarman's other work in avoiding a lover-boy sentimentalising of gay relationships and in making no neat distinction between the exercise and the suffering of violence.Film-making involves a coercive power which, for Bersani and Dutoit, Jarman may, without admitting it to himself, have found deeply seductive. But in Caravaggio this power is renounced, and the result is Jarman's most profound, unsettling and astonishing reflection on sexuality and identity.
Pink Narcissus (1971)
Directed by James BidgoodUSA 64 minutesPink Narcissus is a breathtaking and outrageous erotic poem focussing on the daydreams of a beautiful boy prostitute who, from the seclusion of his ultra-kitsch apartment, conceives a series of interlinked narcissistic fantasies populated by matadors, dancing boys, slaves and leather-clad bikers. The film was shrouded in mystery following its 1971 release, its creator credited only as 'Anonymous', and falsely attributed to filmmakers including Kenneth Anger and Andy Warhol, before being rediscovered and revealed as the work of artist and photographer James Bidgood. It was shot in a haphazard, piecemeal fashion between 1964 and 1970 on 8mm, mainly in Bidgood's small apartment. Its cult status endures, as does adoration for its star, the gorgeous and enigmatic Bobby Kendall. With its highly charged hallucinogenic quality, its atmosphere of lush decadence, and its explicit erotic power, Pink Narcissus is a landmark of gay cinema.

Ricky Martin announces that he is gay
Pop singer Ricky Martin has announced that he is gay on his website, confirming what many had believed for years. The Latin star wrote: "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am." The 38-year-old said his coming out marked "an amazing turning point in my life". The decision was made a few months ago when he began writing his memoirs. He continued: "From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time," The star, who has twin sons by a surrogate mother, said he did not come out earlier because his advisors said the move would ruin his career. Gay rights groups said the singer would be an inspiration to millions of young people coming to terms with their sexuality. Martin became a household name with songs such as the 1999 hit Livin' La Vida Loca and She Bangs.
David Cameron stumbles over gay equality
David Cameron insists he is fully committed to gay equality after apparently struggling to explain the Conservatives' voting record on the issue. The Tory leader stumbled his way through an interview with the Gay Times, appearing uncomfortable and unsure at times. When asked about two recent votes by Conservative politicians - one in Europe and the other in the House of Lords - Mr Cameron said he could not explain what had happened. At one point the Conservative leader even asked the interviewer to stop questioning him so that he could collect his thoughts on the matter. David Cameron has a strong record on gay rights, having previously apologised for Margaret Thatcher's controversial Section 28 and voted in favour of civil partnerships. At a press conference after the interview slip-up he said: "No-one should be in any doubt that the Conservative party abhors homophobia".
Boy George and George Michael end feud

Boy George said: "There is no problem with me and George and there hasn't been for a long time. I've have always liked him as an artist. We've had a few personal problems but a lot of the time it was just me being bitchy." But after all the drama Boy George says he has learned an important lesson. He said: "What I try to do now is to think about what Im saying about people. I don't really think bitchy things about people anymore I've been debitched."
