A track from his final album, Les Marquises, recorded in 1977 which has much to do with death and dying as Jacques was himself suffering from cancer. Yet Jacques Brel being the great artist he was , was able to redeem this difficult experience with some of his finest songs. La Ville S'Endormait might take place on the sleepy island of Hiva Oa where he lived near the cemetary that housed the remains of Gaugin. The simple metronomic two note music in the background and the repetition of the refrain make this dark mood awesome and dramatic. He struggles with fatigue, witnesses hatred and abuse, the sea disenchants, he's angry at women. The darkness only breaks at the end when a near naked young woman passes, but this stanza is open to interpretation. In Mark Almond's translation, she "passed" means she died. Most others think the sudden appearance of feminine beauty brought life back to him. Thanks once again to philipchek of Paris and YouTube for his reflections on this song and his patient corrections of my translation
An audience request by someone drinking a chocolate martini, this is Tiger Lillies classic from the 2003 CD The Gorey End. Highline Ballroom NYC November 10, 2008. Lyrics by Martyn Jacques. Gin To him remarked his fiancée As he was set to go away, Whatever peril you are in Swear you wont resort to gin. Once he arrived in regions far He went to visit the bazaar. Against the fearful native din He thought to take a sip of gin, When he, arrayed in khaki pants, Would go out hunting elephants. The sun would make his head spin, He took a thermos full of gin As fierce uprisings were put down. Time after time inside the town He celebrated every win By toasting all his troops in gin. He mumbled Im awfully tired, Then shortly after he expired, But not before one last tin Of something that was labelled gin. His fiancée came with a wreath Where he was laid six feet beneath, Abandoned by his kith and kin Because he had succumbed to gin.

1n 1958, Georges Moustaki, Alexandrian Greek singer/ songwriter, Piaf's lover and guitarist , wrote this passionate song of promises made by a gypsy to a girl. The sumptuous orchestral accompaniment and flaming violins and guitar create an unforgettable atmosphere .
Brel wrote this wonderful piece of sarcasm in 1959 and recorded it at the same session as Ne Me Quitte Pas. At thirty he was still thinking of his Catholic upbringing , recalling the patronage where the young receive religious education. There, he may have encountered this right wing knitting automaton whose care for the poor goes just so far. Affixed is the rare third verse, only found on vinyl, where care for the poor is just a job. Performance from March, 1962 Club Domino. Rare third verse from The Poetic World of Jacques Brel. Thanks to philipchek of Paris and of Youtube for extensive information about the patronage and other references and idiomatic expressions in this song.
8/8/08, at the Film Forum, Patti Smith together with Steven Sebring, documentarian, respond to audience questions about the new film which has already received a "best cinematography" award from the Sundance Festival, and is very likely to garner many more. Just the right combination of spacey aesthethics and down-to earth -realism, b/w and color, music, art and politics, comedy and tragedy, like Patti herself.
Brel's ebullient tribute to the pride and joy of his native country, Belgium, home of some of the world's finest beers. Recorded September 14,1968. Thanks so much to philipchek of YouTube and Paris who heard this song on the radio when he was a boy, provided translation help and much information.
