What is all this talk about Copyright regarding my videos?
First, let's review what Copyright is. Any creation, be it an article, a book, a song, a film or...a video, can be only be used, reproduced or distributed if the author/creator gives permission to do so: that is what we call a copyright. The creation belongs to its creator and only he or she can give you the right to use it.
You may have heard the expression "intellectual property". It brings together brand rights, patent rights and copyrights.
When you want to upload a video to Dailymotion, you must first be sure that you have the right of the authors (director, screenwriter, soundtrack composer, etc.) in accordance with the Terms of Use.
Of course, if you are the creator of all the components of the video that you want to upload, there is no problem, so no worries! However if that isn't the case, you must ask for the consent of the creators or the rights-holders (these are the legal beneficiaries: TV or film producers, record labels, TV channels, etc.). Keep in mind that Dailymotion doesn't know who the legal beneficiary of every individual video is.
Can I upload extracts of a DVD that I bought?
Warning! Even if you bought a DVD/CD, or that you recorded a program, that doesn't mean you have the right to put it online! The author hasn't necessarily agreed to this. For the same reasons, you can't put images of a concert or a sports game online if you don't have the authorization to do so.
Can I upload extracts of any kind of material?
Some countries make exceptions to copyright protections, generally known as "fair use". Fair use may allow limited use of copyrighted material without the copyright owner's permission, usually within an educational or critical context. Ultimately only local courts or authorities can determine what qualifies as fair use.
Why did Dailymotion delete my video???
There is one thing to keep in mind: Dailymotion doesn't review the thousands of videos put online everyday! We are an internet host: we stock videos that internet users want to share on our machines. However, in accordance with the law, we remove videos that are reported to us, especially when it comes to copyright or privacy issues (you are not allowed to film your neighbors and upload the video without their agreement!).
If I might not have had the right to upload a video, why is it still online elsewhere on site?
Dailymotion doesn't review the videos uploaded, but we remove potentially copyright-infringing videos whenever their URLs are reported to us. The same video may be somewhere else on the website if the complaint doesn't contain all the URL addresses of the video. However, Dailymotion has set up technical solutions so that a reported and removed video cannot reappear on the website.
How can I request that a video containing images of me, or using images that belong to me, be removed from the site?
Under each Dailymotion video there is a "this video may offend" button. Click this button and fill out the subsequent form. Your complaint will be dealt with by our team as soon as possible.
What do you know about me? What kind of information regarding me do you keep?
Dailymotion acts in accordance with what is required by the law: your registration data is kept in order to answer any eventual inquiry by public authorities. However we don't keep anything regarding your browsing history on the website! For more information go to: Privacy policy.

Why do I have problems uploading videos ?
If you are experiencing issues when trying to upload a video on Dailymotion, please make sure that your internet connection is properly working and does not disconnect during the process.
We advise you to close any other active tab in your browser - or to close any other running browser - as it might slow down the upload of heavy-sized videos. Also make sure that your ad-blocker plugin is disabled while uploading if you are using one.
If you are still encountering issues, your flash player plugin might be out of date. In this case please update to the latest version by clicking here.
Last but not least, check the encoding of the source video for which the upload problem occurs and re-encode it following the recommended specifications available here
Why does it say there is an encoding error on one of my videos?
Encoding errors may occur when the format of the uploaded video is not supported by Dailymotion. To avoid these errors, we recommend uploading videos in the following formats: MP4, WMV, MPEG, AVI, DV, 3GP, FLV.
Encoding errors may also occur if your video is not optimized for the web. If you repeatedly receive encoding errors, please contact our support team.
Why doesn't the webcam video appear on my screen?
The webcam video may not appear if your Flash plug-in is not correctly configured. Once you have confirmed that your webcam is plugged in and is recognized by your computer:
- Click on the "Config" button
- Select your webcam in the drop-down menu.
If you still have problems configuring your webcam, click on the question mark located in the upper corner of the "Adobe Flash Player Parameters". You will be automatically redirected to the Adobe Flash help page.
Notes for Mac OS X users:
- Integrated webcams are treated as "USB Video Class Video"
- External iSight cameras correspond to "IIDC Firewire Video"
- DV-camcoder cameras are listed as "DV video"
Why is sound not being recorded through the webcam?
The webcam microphone may not be supported, or the Flash plug-in may not be well configured.
- Click on the "Config" button
- Click the Microphone tab:

- Select a microphone:
- "Built-in Microphone" corresponds to microphones integrated to laptops
- "Built-in Input" corresponds to a microphone plugged in to the computer
- "DV-Camcoder" if you are using a the microphone of a DV-camera connected to your computer
If you still have problems, click the question mark located in the upper corner of the "Adobe Flash Player Parameters". You will be automatically redirected to the help page of Adobe Flash.
How do I make it easier for other users, and search engines, to find my videos?
If you want your video to be seen by others, it's important to provide plenty of textual information when you upload. Quality descriptive text makes videos easier to find inside of Dailymotion, and from external search engine. If you take the time to shoot and upload, you should take the time describe your work!
1. Give it a good title. The title is the shortest description of your video but it's the first thing users will see. Your title should be clear, direct and accurate - don't be misleading.
2. Be sure to tag.Tags are simple keywords or other descriptive terms associated with a video. A few pointers on tagging:
- Separate tags with spaces, for example : paris vacation restaurant
- Put tags with more than one word between quotes, for example : "Michael Jackson" together instead of Michael Jackson with just a space between them, or "New York City" instead of New York City
- Five precise tags are much better than two general tags. For example, a video about a trip in Morocco, tags such as morocco agadir cashbah medina oufella are better than: morocco vacations trips
There's no point in cramming a bunch of info into a video title - that's what the description is for! Descriptions can give background, explanation, or other context to a video, and make them easier to find as well. Some bits of info to include in your description:
- What or who is the video about?
- Who is in the video?
- Where does the video take place (date, place, event)?
- Is there a story behind the video?
- Who is the video made for or dedicated to?
On Dailymotion, as in life, it's better to spell words correctly. Too many typos will make your video harder to find, and if the description is hard to read other users may just skip your video for something else. And, like everywhere else on the web, ALL CAPS is considered YELLING, and is impolite.

What are the rules to use CSV File with the Dailymotion Mass Uploader?
Metadata Rules for CSV :
Every item MUST be expressed on one field in the CSV, which means NO carriage returns should be used either in the source XLT or the CSV itself. For info on adding line breaks to video description, see description, below.
Metadatas order is: filepath,title,official/creative,tags,description,language,channel,recordDate,location,comments,privacy,videostar,group,playlist.
- File should be specified as an absolute path - e.g.
c://videofiles/filename - UNLESS the CSV file and the video files are in the same folder; we therefore recommend placing the CSV file within the same folder as the video files, so the entries in the "file" column will not need to be prefixed with a path
- File must ALWAYS include the file extension
- Language (if not blank) MUST be specified as a 2-letter, ISO language code (e.g. en, fr, de, es, gb...); ONLY ONE language code is permitted
- Description CANNOT contain carriage returns (i.e., using the "return" or "enter" button to create a line break); to insert a line break, use the "|" (pipe) character (formed on qwerty keyboards by "shift+\"). A line break will appear after each "pipe".
- Tags are separated by a space (exemple : Paris vacation restaurant),join 2 or more words with double quotes: "Michael Jackson"
- Channel must contain a valid Dailymotion content cluster name
- Date (if not blank) MUST use the YYYY-MM-DD format (e.g. 2008- 01-01)
- Country (if not blank) MUST be specified as a 2-letter, ISO country code (e.g. us, fr, de, es...); ONLY ONE country code is permitted
- Comments, videostar and private fields MUST be either "yes" or "no" (they must not be left blank)
- Add to group : must use group ID specified on Dailymotion URL (for example : http://www.dailymotion.com/group/bloggie use « bloggie »). Use comma to separate each ID.
- Add to playlist : must use playlist ID specified on Dailymotion URL (for example : http://www.dailymotion.com/playlist/x1n2pl use « x1n2pl »). Use comma to separate each ID.
- Any empty rows used to separate content SHOULD have a "#" (hash) character in the first column so that the DMU ignores it

MotionMakers benefit from specific tools that enable them to be identified on the website as creative users, thereby increasing the visibility of their videos. Moreover, a MotionMaker will be able to customize their profile page; the Creative Content label will appear on their videos; a MotionMaker logo will be added to their profile; they will be able to upload videos of unlimited length (NB: they must still be web-optimized); and, finally, they enjoy higher-quality video encoding (such as HD).
