I came to Timisoara city in Romania as EVS volunteer in September 2011. In following months other local volunteers joined idea about mapping green points and there is a big support of members of local Transition Movement as well.

Anybody willing is invited to send any suggestion and pictures for “green points” to mail address: greenmaptimisoara@gmail.com

First impuls for creating the map came during my experience of social skills teacher. I was teaching teens by non-formal education methods during 10 sessions. One of the topic of discussions was recycling in city. Teens were discussing and finding arguments why is recycling easy/difficult in Romania.

There were different answers, but one was common: „There is no container near my house for separated garbage.“ The fact is when I came to Timisoara I decided to separate garbage from the flat where I used live in. But! The closest container I found was at least 2 km far away from my block of flats.

So there is a question. Is this about lazyness or about bad distribution of containers?

My humble opinion is, that the situation could be solved by better promotion of green opportunities in city. I decided to create a map of green opportunities in Timişoara and there should be different things pointed:

1/ CONTAINERS FOR SEPARATED GARBAGE (plastic bottles, glass, paper, textil,…)
2/ FRESH MILK AUTOMATS & FOUNTAINS FOR DRINKING WATER
3/ GREEN SHOPPING (repair stores for shoes, clocks, electronics, etc., second hand bookshops, secondhand shops with clothes, square markets with local food productions, bike shops, restaurants with vegetarian food,…)
4/ CYCLO LINES/WAYS & PARKS (and their stories)
5/ PUBLIC AND FREE WI-FI CONNECTION
6/ NGOs & INSTITUTIONS working on the field of ENVINROMENTAL PROTECTION, ECO-EDUCATION, RECYCLING, ALTERNATIVE FUELS, etc.
